Enzo Maresca predicted that Phil Foden would get himself on the scoresheet against Ipswich Town on Friday. The Manchester City manager made his playful declaration when he spoke to the media ahead of his pre-game press conference. Maresca’s prediction came true as Phil Foden got himself on the scoresheet yesterday as he opened the scoring in Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium. Foden’s goal was a long time coming, and it did feel like a big moment for the England international.
Phil Foden finally broke his goalless run as he helped Manchester City overcome Ipswich Town.
Up until yesterday, Phil Foden hadn’t scored in the Premier League since December last year. It had been 10 months since Foden had hit the back of the net in the league. To say Foden needed a goal would be an understatement. At times, he had been playing well but his goal-scoring touch had eluded him. It finally returned yesterday and it helped City see off Ipswich Town.
Phil Foden opened the scoring in the 19th minute of yesterday’s match. Manchester City began yesterday’s match brightly and needed a goal for their efforts. That goal came from Phil Foden. Foden fired home a Jeremy Doku ball from the left to get the goal he so desperately needed. It was a typical Foden finish as he ghosted into the Ipswich Town penalty area. Foden’s goal was one he has scored so many times during his career and it was clear how much the goal meant to him in the ensuing celebrations.
Manchester City had to fight their way to a 3-2 win over Ipswich Town yesterday. Foden played a key role in City’s win. His confidence grew after his goal and the energy and confidence was back in Foden’s play. That was pleasing to see and hopefully it is a sign of what is to come from Foden.
Enzo Maresca believes that Phil Foden’s goal could set him on his way.
Speaking after his team beat Ipswich Town, Enzo Maresca was thrilled to see Phil Foden get back in the scoresheet. Also, Maresca was hopeful that Foden’s goal is just the beginning for Foden. In an interview published on mancity.com, Maresca said: “With Phil I said many times, I know him from years ago, for me he’s one of the best Premier League players. And since day one it’s my duty to help him to again be one of the best players.”
“I’m very happy for his goal, and hopefully it can be just the beginning of many goals and good performances.”
Phil Foden finally bagged the goal he so desperately needed against Ipswich Town yesterday. Foden also returned to the pitch for the first time since he was sent off in Manchester City’s win over Manchester United last month. Foden’s goal could light his fuse and he also put in a timely reminder of what he brings to Enzo Maresca’s side against Ipswich Town.
