The Memphis Grizzlies made a surprising roster decision Monday, waiving former first-round pick Walter Clayton Jr. and guard Micah Peavy ahead of the NBA's deadline to finalize regular-season rosters.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Memphis released both players to meet the league's 15-player roster limit before the start of the 2026-27 season. The decision involving Clayton is particularly surprising considering his draft status and potential as a young guard.
Clayton, selected 18th overall by the Utah Jazz in the 2025 NBA Draft, joined Memphis in February as part of the blockbuster trade that sent former Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah.
During his 24 appearances with the Grizzlies last season, Clayton averaged 9.7 points, 5.7 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game.
Grizzlies make bold roster shakeup
Despite showing flashes of promise, Clayton struggled to establish himself as a consistent contributor. Memphis reportedly explored potential trades before ultimately deciding to release the second-year guard.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Sacramento Kings emerged as a possible destination during trade discussions, but no agreement materialized.
Clayton previously enjoyed a successful college career at Florida, helping lead the Gators to the 2025 NCAA national championship while earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors.
Meanwhile, Peavy was selected 40th overall in the 2025 draft and spent his rookie season with the New Orleans Pelicans.
He appeared in 61 games, averaging 4.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists before joining Memphis through a September trade.
An ankle injury limited Peavy's opportunity to compete for a roster spot during training camp.
For Memphis, the moves reflect a commitment to reshaping its roster around younger talent while creating opportunities for players already established within the organization.
However, releasing Clayton could eventually become a decision the Grizzlies regret if the former Florida standout develops into a productive NBA guard elsewhere.
Both players will now have opportunities to continue their professional careers with another franchise as Memphis prepares for Wednesday's season opener against Utah.
