Tommy Carr started at quarterback for Michigan football, but the offensive production against Indiana went back to anemic.
Carr, the 19-year-old true freshman from Saline, made his first collegiate start Saturday, Oct. 24, in place of the benched Bryce Underwood, committed two turnovers in the first half, then helped rally the offense to force overtime against the No. 6 Indiana Hoosiers, before losing 13-6, at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
IU won at Michigan for the first time since 1967.
Michigan (4-3, 1-3 Big Ten) trailed 6-3, went 58 yards in 13 plays taking the final 7:32 of regulation, but Carr was sacked on third-and-goal at the 3, setting up a Trey Butkowski 26-yard tying field goal and forcing OT.
Indiana (7-1, 4-1) got the ball first and quarterback Josh Hoover scored the game's first touchdown from 4 yards out on a designed run to the right on the second play of overtime. That came after a 21-yard completion to tight end Brock Schott – IU's first completion after halftime. Hoover played through a right throwing arm injury suffered last week against Ohio State.
On Michigan's possession, Carr ran for 6 yards on fourth-and-5 to the IU 14, but could not get a second first down when his scrambling fourth-down pass to the left sideline bounced into the hands of an open receiver.
Carr finished 20-for-32 for 167 yards, a pick and a lost fumble.
Michigan's defense was fantastic once again, with Chris Bracy making 13 tackles and Zeke Berry intercepting Hoover in the third quarter and returning it to the IU 13 (Hoover entered the game with 18 TDs and 0 INTs).
But Michigan went three-and-out and settled for a 29-yard Butkowski field goal – moments after he hooked a 32-yarder left after Michigan's best possession of the game: 14 plays and 61 yards.
Butkowski also hooked a 53-yard field goal way left after Carr took a third-and-3 sack for an 12-yard loss.
Michigan visits Rutgers on Halloween next week (12:30 p.m., BTN). Indiana hosts Minnesota.
