Boston-based Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has named Eliezer Van Allen, MD, its inaugural chief AI officer, the cancer center said in an Oct. 23 LinkedIn post.
Dr. Van Allen will lead Dana-Farber’s AI strategy, governance and portfolio across its research, clinical, operational and administrative work. His responsibilities include AI platform development and implementation, translational deployment of AI innovations, and building organizational capabilities and talent.
He will also lead an executive council responsible for oversight of privacy, regulatory compliance, patient-facing risk and financial stewardship of the institute’s AI investments.
Dr. Van Allen will keep his roles as chief of Dana-Farber’s Division of Population Sciences and as the Chandra Nohria Family Chair for AI in Cancer Research. His LinkedIn profile lists a September start date in the new role.
A translational genomics investigator, Dr. Van Allen completed an oncology fellowship at Dana-Farber and has held faculty roles there since 2013. He is also a professor of medicine at Boston-based Harvard Medical School and an institute member at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in Cambridge, Mass.
Dana-Farber said Dr. Van Allen holds the view that AI, used appropriately, can strengthen the humanistic values of medicine.
The appointment adds Dana-Farber to a growing group of academic medical centers and cancer centers with dedicated AI executives, including Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope and Cleveland Clinic.
