When your job involves testing bedding, learning the difference between soft sheets and the softest sheets is like a science. Our Shop AD editors know this all too well. After reviewing more than 100 sheet sets over the last few years, we understand firsthand how bamboo viscose bedding has a silky texture, and percale sheets made up of Supima cotton fibers feel plush—like the button-down shirt you’ve thrown in the wash more times than you can count.
Of course, these aren’t the only types of sheets that feel cozy to curl up with each night. Our favorite materials also span decadent flannels perfect for winter nights and smooth sateens that feel breathable for even the hottest of sleepers. To help you find the set that’s right for you, we whittled down our list to the plushest picks our writers sleep on night after night—all in the name of research. Cozy Earth’s bamboo-viscose sheet set hits the sweet spot when it comes to soft bedding, according to several AD writers and contributors. It feels plush, cooling, and surprisingly lightweight. “The set feels as if I am lulled to sleep by gentle waves—the material is barely perceptible, but still decadent—one of the reasons it works equally well under a quilt or a cloudy down comforter,” says contributor Yelena Moroz Alpert. “Not sure how Cozy Earth does it, but the sheets feel like velvet without being heavy. Two years later, [the set] still looks as good as new.”
That airiness is also what makes shopping editor Audrey Lee a “big fan” of her Cozy Earth linens. According to the brand, bamboo fibers are more hollow than cotton and offer more breathability. Senior shopping editor Nashia Baker lauds the sheets for their deep pockets, which easily accommodate her notoriously tall mattress and topper combo.
Contributor Megan Wahn is another convert. “I honestly thought these sheets were silk when I first slept on them; that’s how smooth and buttery soft they feel,” she says. Alternatively, the new Sonoma florals in vintage white are a good contender if you like a neutral shade like 2026’s color of the year, Cloud Dancer. If you buy these directly from Amazon, they will ship for free.

Quince continues to impress us with premium materials at solid price points. That’s why we’ve named these the best percale sheets overall. AD PRO senior editor Mel Studach is a percale devotee, and says Quince’s are significantly softer than most she’s tried. “Being 100% cotton, the set is also nicely breathable,” she says. “And while the crisp, smooth texture is incredibly comfortable for sleeping, I also appreciate that when I make my bed every morning, the sheets maintain their structure sans unsightly wrinkles.”
Meaghan Kenny, commerce editor at Condé Nast Traveler, is also a fan, and writes that these are the coolest sheets (literally) she’s ever slept on. “They rival the ones from five-star hotel rooms well and make me look forward to climbing into bed every night even more than I already do,” she says. Kenny adds that while they are temperature-regulating and soft, they’re more crisp than silky sheets. As a plus, the brand’s patterns like dainty florals and gingham easily add personality to your bedscape.

Long-staple Egyptian cotton
Long-staple cotton has a stellar reputation for its ultra-soft weave, and the Wamsutta Supreme Egyptian cotton sheet set is the ideal example of its quality. Shopping writer Julia Harrison loves how gentle the bedding feels against her sensitive skin once it’s broken in. (It’s no coincidence that it’s a 600-thread-count set.) “These are my go-to hosting sheets, since I find a worn-in percale is a more universal favorite for my guests—soft, cooling, cozy,” she explains. While the high-end feel is on par with premium boutique-hotel brands, Wamsutta falls in a comfortable price range associated with quality bedding. Harrison adds that after a year of sleeping and washing this sheet set, she has yet to spot pilling, tearing, or loose threads. “It’s just getting softer, while still maintaining its crispness,” Harrison adds.

If anyone can vet Boll & Branch’s signature sateen sheets, it’s contributor Rachel Fletcher, who's had this supremely soft bedding for at least five years. “That extra-soft feel paired with the lovely, cooling properties make them feel like the luxury sheets that they are,” she says in her best sheets review.
“Even though I have at least four cotton sateen sheets in my linen closet, I couldn’t help but get the piped-edge style,” says Alpert. “It may be a minor detail, but it adds just enough interest to the creamy colorway. These are perfect for transitional weather when I want to feel pampered but don’t want to transition to seasonal bedding. The texture is something like whipped butter, especially after laundering.” Alpert also noticed that the fitted sheet fits her 14-inch-high Bryte Balance Pro mattress like a glove. “Saggy sheets are a pet peeve of mine and Boll & Branch makes my bed look like it’s always made by a professional,” she says. While Boll & Branch is not inexpensive, their year-round versatility helps justify the splurge. You can also request free swatches before committing to a full set.

When you share a bed, flannel bedding can be surprisingly divisive, especially if one of you sleeps hot. But Garnet Hill Cozy Scallop flannel sheets can be your Switzerland. “This is the ideal flannel sheet set for couples who might like different degrees of warmth,” says Alpert, who likes to be bundled up but shares a bed with a husband who is always throwing off covers. “It has the softness and warmth that keeps me cocooned, but it’s not suffocating.” The sage-trimmed scalloped edge introduces the right dose of whimsy without veering into an overly saccharine design. “It works especially well with my pear-print duvet cover because it’s coordinated but keeps my bed from looking chaotic,” Alpert adds.

Sateen gets plenty of attention for softness, but wait till you try the GreenRow Helena sheet set in cotton satin. “If I didn’t know any better, I'd think there is some cashmere snuck in,” says Alpert. “The feel is this silky softness as if the fabric was brushed by a mystical pixie dust of plushness.” The buttery yellow florals are a welcome departure from solid bedding, with a ruffled micro-gingham border that adds an unexpected contrast. After a year of use, the stitching has held up, and Alpert hasn’t noticed any pilling or color-fading.

You likely have some cashmere in your wardrobe, but these sheets from Brooklinen take that cozy texture to your bedscape. The heathered detailing and thread variation provide more texture and dimension to this otherwise neutral set. “Like a posh sweater, the blend of cotton and Himalayan cashmere feels as if the threads are whipped into a fluffy weave,” shares Alpert. “Even though it is light, the bedding feels incredibly soft and substantial.” Referring to them as her go-to cold weather sheets, Alpert says they're a significantly more lightweight swap for classic flannel bedding. “Even my husband, who can be finicky about flannel sheets, is a fan of these,” she adds.

There is long-staple cotton and then there is Supima. While the former is a standard in luxury bedding, Rebecca Udall sheets take this quality to another level. “The Thea set sits somewhere between a washed percale and a softer cotton,” says contributor Kate McGregor. “It’s not [too] crisp, but they hold a satisfying structure—a must when trying to show off the delicate trim detail. They’re refined yet a bit playful.” McGregor also describes the fabric as “cooling and sturdy,” thanks to the percale weave that doesn’t hold a wrinkle like linen bedding.

The Bearaby set stands apart from the rest for their 100% bamboo construction and an unexpected addition: peppermint extract. “The sheets live up to their ‘second skin’ name since the fabric almost melts on my body because of the comforting, fluid feel,” says Baker, who chose the charcoal colorway to keep her bed free of skincare product residue. To balance the cooling and breathable fabric when fall weather kicks in, Baker pairs this set with her cashmere duvet. For the final touch, the button closure on the pillowcases are another welcome detail, keeping pillows in place for those who toss and turn at night.
FAQ
What Thread Count Is Best for Soft Sheets?
Thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric. So, the higher the thread count, usually the softer the sheets—though the average cotton sheet is between 200 and 600. For example, “Sateen sheets in the 300 to 600 thread-count range are best for someone looking for softness over durability, and better for cooler climates where a heavier feeling sheet is more comfortable,” Katie Glusica, professor in the fibers department at the Savannah College of Art and Design, previously told AD.
What Is the Difference Between a Flat sheet, a Fitted Sheet, and a Top Sheet?
Most sheet sets come with a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. When you’re layering your bedding, secure the fitted sheet—a sheet with elasticized, rounded edges—over your mattress or mattress pad. Then, top it with the flat sheet, a.k.a. the top sheet. This might be enough for people who run hot, but most finish their bed with a comforter or quilt.
What Cotton Sheets Feel Soft Yet Breathable?
For soft sheets with an airier feel, consider a set of 200 to 300 thread count sheets, like the Quince 100% percale cotton sheets or bamboo bedding from Cozy Earth or Bearaby. Cotton sateen sheets like the Boll & Branch set Fletcher has are usually smooth and soft but not as heavy as flannel or cashmere-blend sets. Alternatively, quality Egyptian cotton or Supima sets look structured but still create a breathable experience.
What to Look For
If softness is the number one criteria for your bedding, it helps to know a little about the materials and weaves used in bedding. Not all cotton bedding is the same, and the weave can make a big difference. Luckily, retailers label the type of weave used to make the sheets. The two most popular categories are percale and sateen. “Percale is a classic one-over, one-under construction that creates a crisp, breathable fabric with a matte finish reminiscent of fine poplin shirting, while sateen’s longer thread float produces a smoother hand and subtle sheen,” says Rebecca Weinstein, vice president of design at Highgate, the management company for the Atlas Hotel in Boston.
- Percale: Let’s start with the lightest and airiest cotton weaves: percale. “There are no long floats in the fabric,” says Preeti Gopinath, associate professor of textiles and founding director of the MFA textiles program at Parsons School of Design in New York, who explains that a float is when yarn goes over two or more threads before it is bound. This technique creates a crisp, structured feel and a satisfying rustle reminiscent of fall leaves
- Sateen: Sateen, on the other hand, has a smoother, more fluid drape and is often described as buttery in texture. Its three-over, one-under or four-over, one-under weave creates longer yarn floats and fewer interlacing points, resulting in a silkier surface. Gopinath describes the fabric as “flexible and bendable.” The higher the thread count—400 to 800 thread count—the more durable (and wrinkle-free) the sheet set. Some sets are made with Egyptian and Supima yarn, both of which use extra-long staple cotton that feels practically pristine in its smoothness.
- Cotton-Cashmere: For a cozier feel, look to cotton-cashmere blends, which adda bit more plushness without feeling as substantial as flannel. The latter gets its signature velvety texture from brushing the fabric to raise fine fibers on its surface, making it a favorite for colder nights.
Bamboo viscose: Bamboo viscose (or rayon) is a cellulose fiber that is soaked and then spun into filaments to create parachute-like sheets. AD testers often compare bamboo bedding to silk sheets, but without the hefty price tag. Unlike microfiber sheets that can trap heat, bamboo viscose is often praised for its moisture-wicking properties and as a hypoallergenic bedding alternative.
How We Tested the Softest Sheets
For the softest bed sheets, we did more than look at swatches. When it comes to editing, the Shop AD team focuses beyond words. Part of our job involves testing products firsthand—and bedding is a category that is taken very seriously. As a result, we have slept on hundreds of sheets across different brands and can distinguish cotton percale from a sateen weave within seconds.
But it’s more than that; each set we review goes through at least 30 days of testing to help us truly tell if they’re durable and designed to last. For this roundup, we looked at materials that range from organic cotton to bamboo to flannel. Since our editors and contributors live across different climates, we are also able to see if performance sheets with cooling properties actually work for hot sleepers.
Once the editors zero in on high-quality bedding, the testing goes on for months—and in some cases years—because we actually want to sleep on these sheets. As a result, the set goes through multiple machine wash and dryer cycles. We look for colorfastness, loose threads, and pilling. Only the strongest contenders remain.
