IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva expects Argentina to repay early, Argentine outlets say, after comparing it with Greece on Thursday. She said Argentina will be like Greece and repay, at a panel at the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva expects Argentina to repay early, Argentine outlets reported on Thursday, 15 October. She spoke at an Annual Meetings panel in Bangkok alongside Argentina’s Economy Minister Luis Caputo.
Argentina owes the IMF, the Washington-based lender to governments, about US$56.8 billion, roughly a third of all IMF credit outstanding. Washington also backs President Javier Milei’s programme, so any prepayment would be watched closely.
What Georgieva Said in Bangkok
The remark came at the Annual Meetings session Debate on the Global Economy, held in Bangkok on Thursday. The IMF lists Georgieva and Greece’s finance minister, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, as speakers; The Nation, a Bangkok daily, also quotes Caputo.
Perfil, El Cronista and C5N quote her saying Argentina will “be like Greece” and will “repay”. Diario de Cuyo, Diario Panorama and Crónica quote her saying Argentina will “pay in advance”, the basis of their early-repayment headlines.
Caputo answered “You will be surprised” and “That is already happening”, Diario de Cuyo and C5N report. El Cronista places that second line as his answer on ending dependence on the IMF.
Caputo told the panel that Argentina cut public spending by 30% and that inflation fell from 211% in 2023 to about 30%. INDEC, the national statistics office, put annual inflation at 33.4% in September, above the “about 30%” he cited.
How Argentina Could Repay Early
The IMF counts in SDR, its unit of account, and Argentina owed SDR 41.97 billion on 30 September 2026. At US$1.3528 per SDR, the Fund’s rate on 14 October, that is about US$56.8 billion, or 34% of IMF credit outstanding.
The debt comes from a 2022 loan, with SDR 30.52 billion still owed, and a 2025 loan of about US$20 billion. The 2025 programme is set to run to 10 April 2029, and the IMF says about US$15.8 billion has been paid out.
A 2022 Ministry of Economy deck schedules the first repayment on the 2018 and 2022 programmes for September 2026. The last instalment on that schedule, about US$183 million (SDR 135 million), falls in August 2034.
C5N, Crónica, Diario de Cuyo and Diario Panorama add 2034 as the maturity date, yet their quotes of her contain no year. Diario de Cuyo says her words do not formally change the payment schedule.
Greece and Argentina’s Own Early Repayments
On Friday, 25 February 2022, Greece’s finance minister said eurozone ministers had approved a third early repayment of IMF loans. OT.gr, a Greek business outlet, wrote that the latest loan package was due to mature in 2024.
Argentina did it before: in December 2005 it announced early repayment of its whole IMF debt, about US$9.9 billion. Then Managing Director Rodrigo de Rato said it reflected Argentina’s confidence in its own external position.
The Third Review of the 2025 Loan Is Still Open
Georgieva and Caputo met in Bangkok on Tuesday, 13 October, and both called the meeting excellent in posts on X, Perfil reports. Georgieva wrote that the teams are working closely to finalise third review discussions.
On 1 October, IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack said a mission led by Joyce Wong visited Buenos Aires from 21 to 29 September. Talks on a staff-level agreement for the third review are ongoing, with fiscal targets on the agenda.
The next payout under the 2025 loan needs the third review to conclude and a vote by the IMF Executive Board. Argentine outlets give differing estimates for the next payout, and the IMF has published no amount or date.
The IMF’s May staff report warned that political uncertainty before the 2027 presidential election could prompt capital outflows. It also cites about US$20 billion of principal due to private creditors and the Fund during 2027.
What It Means for US Readers
Holders of Argentine dollar bonds and NYSE-listed shares such as YPF follow the IMF’s tone on Milei’s programme closely. Georgieva’s remark is a vote of confidence, but the third review of the 2025 loan is still open.
The US Treasury’s Exchange Stabilization Fund signed a US$20 billion swap framework with Argentina’s central bank in October 2025. Argentina drew US$2.5 billion and repaid it in December 2025, and the Treasury’s January 2026 accounts show no drawings outstanding.
Visitors to Buenos Aires and anyone paid in pesos feel the programme through exchange rates and prices. For the wider picture, see Argentina Explained and Argentina’s foreign powers and investors.
What Is Not Known
No IMF transcript of the panel was available, so the exact English words are unconfirmed. Outlets translate them differently, as “repay” or as “pay in advance”.
It is unclear whether she meant full prepayment, earlier instalments or simply repayment on time. The tables checked do not show when the 2025 loan falls due, so 2034 may not be the last date.
Outlets also differ on what Caputo’s “That is already happening” answered, and none says Argentina has started prepaying. The IMF has published no amount or date for the next payout and the Board vote.
What Comes Next
The Annual Meetings run to Sunday, 18 October, and teams from the IMF and Caputo’s ministry keep working on the third review. A staff-level agreement, the IMF team’s deal before the Board votes, would come first, then the Board vote.
