KATHMANDU, Oct 25: The third edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), beginning Monday at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, will bring established international cricketers and emerging Nepali talent together as the country seeks to expand its presence in global cricket.
Running until November 21, the tournament is expected to build on the growing popularity of franchise cricket in Nepal, attract greater commercial investment and give domestic players opportunities to compete alongside experienced international cricketers.
The arrival of well-known foreign players, strong demand for opening-match tickets and growing interest in franchise teams have raised expectations for this year’s competition. However, the tournament’s long-term significance will depend not only on its popularity but also on how effectively it develops Nepali players, strengthens cricket infrastructure and generates sustainable commercial opportunities.
International stars bring fresh attention to Kirtipur
The participation of internationally recognised players is one of the main attractions of this year’s NPL. Franchises have finalised their overseas signings, bringing experienced cricketers from several countries to Nepal.
Among the notable names expected to feature are Moeen Ali, Shakib Al Hasan, Ravi Bopara, Scott Kuggeleijn, Niroshan Dickwella, Angelo Mathews, Charith Asalanka, Andre Russell, Iftikhar Ahmed, Fabian Allen and David Warner. Karnali Yaks have also signed Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan and Hussain Talat.
Their participation could give Nepali players valuable opportunities to learn from international professionals, exchange technical knowledge and gain experience in a competitive franchise environment. Training and playing alongside cricketers who have appeared in major leagues around the world could expose domestic players to different approaches to batting, bowling, fielding and match strategy.
Foreign stars have attracted attention in previous editions as well. Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan’s participation in the inaugural season generated considerable interest among Nepali fans. Since then, the tournament has continued to develop its profile, with international participation and recognition from the International Cricket Council helping expand its reach.
However, prominent names alone cannot guarantee a higher standard of competition. Their actual contribution will depend on their performances, their engagement with Nepali teammates and the opportunities the tournament creates for domestic cricket over time.

Ticket sales have offered an early indication of the public’s enthusiasm. Tickets for the opening match reportedly sold out online within around 30 minutes of sales opening, highlighting the demand for the tournament’s return.

Organisers have set general tickets at Rs 500 and VIP tickets at Rs 1,000 for league-stage matches. For the Eliminator and final, general tickets will cost Rs 1,000, while VIP tickets will cost Rs 2,000.
On days featuring two matches, the first game will begin at 12:30 pm and the second at 5 pm. On days with only one match, play will start at 5 pm.
The strong demand suggests that the NPL has established itself as a major sporting attraction in Nepal. Sustaining that interest, however, will require organisers to maintain the quality of competition, improve spectator facilities, manage matches efficiently and ensure financial transparency.
A successful tournament must offer more than an exciting opening and crowded stands. Consistent organisation and a positive experience for spectators will be essential if the league hopes to build a loyal audience over successive seasons.
Balancing overseas experience with domestic player development
The growing presence of foreign players has created new opportunities for Nepali cricket, but it has also raised questions about how the league can ensure that domestic players benefit from the investment and attention it attracts.
The NPL’s success should not be measured solely by the reputation of its overseas signings or the size of its audience. The number of opportunities Nepali players receive, their improvement during the competition and the talent the league helps develop for the national team will also matter.
Playing alongside experienced international cricketers can help domestic players develop their skills and tactical understanding. But the league must also provide Nepali players with meaningful roles and sufficient time on the field for that exposure to translate into progress.
The tournament could become an important pathway for emerging cricketers if franchises, coaches and cricket administrators use it to identify talent, improve training standards and prepare players for higher levels of competition.
Absence of Indian players draws attention
Indian cricketers have long influenced the popularity and development of cricket in Nepal. Many Nepali players grew up watching Indian cricket, and fans have traditionally shown strong interest in Indian players competing in domestic tournaments.
This year, the lack of a notable Indian presence has attracted attention within cricket circles, despite the participation of established players from several other countries.
However, the league’s international growth does not depend on players from any single country. Bringing cricketers from a wider range of cricketing nations can expose Nepali players to different playing styles, tactical approaches and professional experiences.
If organisers can broaden the range of overseas participants in future editions, the tournament could strengthen its international profile and create additional opportunities for Nepali cricket.
NPL offers commercial and tourism opportunities
The league’s growth also has implications beyond the cricket ground. Franchise investment, sponsorship deals, broadcasting, ticket sales and services associated with the tournament could generate economic activity and expand the commercial base of Nepali cricket.
Greater international participation and attention could also support sports tourism. Players, officials and visiting spectators may increase demand for hotels, transport, restaurants and other local services.
Turning that potential into measurable economic benefits will require planning, investment and effective coordination. Organisers and relevant stakeholders must also ensure that the tournament’s commercial growth supports the wider development of cricket rather than remaining concentrated around a few weeks of competition.
Revenue generated through the NPL could help improve cricket infrastructure, strengthen player training, expand age-group competitions and promote the sport at the grassroots level. Investing in these areas would allow the tournament to benefit Nepali cricket well beyond the duration of each season.
Building a lasting legacy beyond the tournament
As thousands of fans prepare to watch international stars at the Kirtipur ground, the league faces an opportunity to demonstrate that franchise cricket can contribute to Nepal’s wider sporting ambitions.
The third edition brings together several elements that could help the sport grow: recognised international players, an enthusiastic domestic audience, franchise investment and an increasingly established competition. Yet these factors will deliver lasting value only if the organisers translate them into tangible improvements for Nepali cricket.
That means creating meaningful opportunities for domestic players, strengthening management and infrastructure, expanding access to cricket training and directing resources towards long-term development.
The NPL has the potential to become more than an entertainment event. By helping Nepali players gain experience, attracting investment and creating a stronger pathway from domestic competitions to the national team, it could play a significant role in the sport’s professional development.
The cheers at Kirtipur will celebrate exciting performances, but the league’s lasting achievement will depend on what follows after the final match. If Nepali talent can benefit from international experience, if commercial returns support the sport’s development and if young players gain better opportunities, the NPL could become a stronger foundation for Nepal’s ambitions in world cricket.
The third edition offers another opportunity to build that future. Turning it into a lasting legacy will require sustained commitment from players, franchises, organisers and the wider cricketing community.
