Pirate Chain, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency network, is rolling back its blockchain after developers discovered an exploit in the transparent accounting layer introduced with its recent Ironwood upgrade. The rollback will restore the network to its state at 20:00 UTC on October 14, 2026, reversing all blocks produced after that point.
The project announced the incident on October 15 and notified cryptocurrency exchanges to suspend deposits and withdrawals. Users were also advised to avoid sending, receiving, or otherwise transacting with ARRR until further notice.
The incident affects the transparent supply-accounting mechanism associated with Ironwood, although Pirate Chain has not confirmed any loss of user funds or a compromise of its shielded transaction system.
Exchanges Suspend ARRR Deposits and Withdrawals
Pirate Chain said developers were investigating the exploit and working on a fix, with additional technical details expected after the rollback and investigation were completed.
Cryptocurrency exchange MEXC suspended ARRR deposits and withdrawals at the project’s request, according to its maintenance notices.
The team has not released a detailed explanation of the vulnerability or confirmed whether incorrect supply accounting was recorded on the blockchain before the rollback. Some community members have raised the possibility of an inflation or accounting bug, but the project has not verified that interpretation.
The rollback effectively reverses the chain’s recent history to restore an earlier state. This can affect transaction finality and require exchanges and users to reconcile activity recorded after the designated cutoff.
How the Ironwood Turnstile Protects Coin Supply
Pirate Chain uses zero-knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge, known as zk-SNARKs, to conceal transaction details while allowing the network to verify that transactions are valid. The system hides senders, recipients, and transaction amounts by default.
Because shielded balances are not publicly visible, the network also needs a mechanism to verify that the total supply remains consistent and that coins cannot be created without authorization.
A turnstile provides this accounting function by tracking the value entering and leaving a shielded pool. It is designed to prevent withdrawals from exceeding the amount legitimately deposited.
Pirate Chain’s implementation uses a transparent accounting layer to perform these checks. The exploit was identified in that layer, although the precise technical failure remains undisclosed.
Ironwood Upgrade Went Live in October
Pirate Chain activated Ironwood through a hard fork beginning at 19:00 UTC on October 3, 2026, with the upgrade taking effect 60 blocks later. Users of its Treasure Chest full-node wallet and command-line interface wallet were required to update to version 6.0.7 or later to support Ironwood key derivation.
The network skipped Zcash’s earlier Orchard shielded pool and moved directly from Sapling to Ironwood, which uses the Halo 2 proving system. Halo 2 eliminates the need for a trusted setup ceremony, reducing reliance on an initial cryptographic configuration that participants must assume was conducted correctly.
The upgrade also incorporated machine-checked formal verification for its circuit design and an update to Delayed Proof of Work, a security mechanism inherited from the Komodo ecosystem that periodically records blockchain snapshots on a larger proof-of-work network.
Zcash’s Ironwood Origins
Ironwood originated from Zcash’s response to a soundness vulnerability discovered in its Orchard shielded pool on May 29, 2026. Security researcher Taylor Hornby identified the flaw while working for Shielded Labs. Pirate Chain said at the time that ARRR was unaffected because it had not deployed Orchard.
The vulnerability could potentially have enabled counterfeit coins to be created within Orchard without detection. Zcash responded by sealing the affected pool and introducing turnstile accounting to help preserve independent supply verification. Its Ironwood upgrade went live on July 28, 2026.
We regret to inform you that an exploit in the new transparent layer related to the Ironwood turnstile for supply accounting has been identified. The developers will be rolling the chain back to 14 October 2026, 1:00 PM Pacific Time. All exchanges have been notified and are temporarily suspending deposits and withdrawals. Please refrain from sending or receiving funds and avoid using your wallet in the meantime. We appreciate your patience while we resolve the issue. Our developers are already working on a fix. Further details will follow once the rollback is complete and an investigation has concluded.

Unlike Zcash, which addressed the supply risk without rolling back its blockchain, Pirate Chain is reverting its transaction history because the identified problem involves the accounting mechanism itself.
ARRR Price Remains Relatively Stable
ARRR traded between $0.27 and $0.28 on October 15, placing its estimated market capitalization between $53 million and $55 million. Approximately 196.2 million tokens were circulating against a maximum supply of 200 million.
Trading activity remained relatively thin, and no sharp price movement immediately followed the announcement. The token remained more than 98% below its April 2021 record high.
However, limited liquidity could amplify price volatility when transfers and exchange activity resume.
Investigation and Network Recovery Ahead
Pirate Chain‘s immediate priorities are to identify the exploit, deploy a fix, verify the blockchain’s accounting state, and establish when normal transactions can safely resume.
The investigation must determine whether any incorrect supply accounting reached the chain, what adjustments are necessary, and how the rollback affected transactions recorded after the cutoff. Until the team publishes further guidance, exchange suspensions and user transaction restrictions are expected to remain in place.
The incident highlights the risks of introducing new cryptographic and accounting infrastructure into privacy-focused blockchain networks, where transaction confidentiality makes independent supply verification particularly important.
