Talk to anybody who has done a few summers in Lagos or Carvoeiro and the ideal boat day comes out almost word for word. Go early. Cliffs the colour of toast. A skipper who insists the dolphins were here yesterday, honestly. Then November rolls in, the Atlantic goes moody, and the beach bars pile up their plastic chairs till spring.
That's roughly when a certain kind of Algarve regular starts glancing at flights. Emirates runs a non-stop from Lisbon to Dubai that takes about seven and a half hours, and the Gulf hits its most pleasant stretch just as the Portuguese one fizzles out. Anyone toying with the idea can look up Renty yacht charter prices in Dubai for the dates they're eyeing and get a sense of what a winter day on the water there involves. Fair warning, though. It's nothing like home.
The Algarve: let the rocks do the talking
Here the coastline is the whole show. Boats out of Vilamoura, Portimão or Lagos are really about stone (arches, stacks, grottoes and the odd beach you can only reach by sea). Ponta da Piedade, just outside Lagos, is a proper labyrinth of it. Head east to the Ria Formosa and things calm right down: sandbanks, salt flats, wading birds and very little drama, in a good way.
Dolphin-spotting trips are a fixture of the Algarve summer as well, though sightings, like anything involving wild animals, come with no guarantees. Go in with low expectations and the odd fin breaking the surface feels like a proper bonus.
And Benagil? Still gorgeous, but busier than ever and now with rules to match. Since August 2024 you can't swim into the caves, nobody's allowed to land on the sand inside, unguided kayak hire nearby is banned, and there's a ceiling on how many boats may be in at once. It all sits inside a marine natural park, so ask a licensed operator what's actually possible before promising the kids anything.
Then there's the Atlantic itself. Bracing water, a swell with opinions, and a season that runs, give or take, from late spring to early autumn.
Dubai: the city is the view
Dubai turns all of that upside down. Most days the water is flat, you can swim without gasping, and every bit of scenery was put there by someone with a crane and a very big budget. Boats generally leave from Dubai Marina. A loop takes in the huge wheel on Bluewaters Island, then Atlantis, coral-pink, at the tip of Palm Jumeirah, then the Burj Al Arab doing its giant-sail impression further along.
How people book differs too. Forget the forty-seat cave tour. Here the norm is a private yacht rental for a couple of hours, very often at sunset, with music, snacks and a swim stop where that's allowed. Two or three hours is typical, which leaves plenty of evening for dinner ashore.
Mind the calendar, mind you. October to April is pleasant. May is when the heat turns fierce. Wind can scrap a booking even in January, mind, so ask how rescheduling works before handing over a deposit.
Questions worth asking, on either coast
Whichever side of the map you're on, a few questions save grief later:
Is it a shared trip, or the whole boat to yourselves?
What happens if the swell (Algarve) or the wind (Dubai) won't play ball?
Will there be a swim stop, and is swimming actually allowed where you're going?
Are snacks, water and towels included, or do you bring your own?
How long are you really at sea, once boarding and the safety talk are done?
Two coasts, one calendar
The upshot? Nobody's forcing you to pick. Algarve in July, Dubai in January, and a boat in both. Limestone and wild water for one half of the year, glass towers and flat warm sea for the other. There are worse ways to dodge a Portuguese winter.
