The Grizzlies kicked their season off with a dominant 123-103 win over the Utah Jazz. It was a great start for a team entering a new era, with Ty Jerome leading the way offensively and Cameron Boozer making his NBA debut.
While Jerome’s career night grabbed the headlines, there were other reasons for Memphis fans to be encouraged beyond him. Boozer found ways to contribute despite struggling to score, and the Grizzlies controlled the game in several important areas.
Here are the three biggest takeaways from Memphis’ opening-night win.
Ty Jerome Makes a Statement
Ty Jerome could not have asked for a much better start to the season. Jerome hit a career-high in points with 45 on 17-of-25 shooting, including five 3-pointers, while adding seven rebounds and six assists.
Jerome’s 45 points set a franchise record for the most points scored by a Memphis player in a season opener, surpassing Ja Morant‘s previous mark of 44.
With Morant now in Portland, Memphis needs players who can help lead the offense. Jerome showed that he can do more than run the point, using his scoring ability to put pressure on Utah’s defense and help the Grizzlies pull away.
Obviously, nobody should expect Jerome to score 45 points every night. However, this performance showed what he can bring to the team when he’s in rhythm.
If Jerome can continue to run the offense, score efficiently and get his teammates involved, he could become an important part of Memphis’ offensive identity this season.
Boozer Impacts the Game Differently
Cameron Boozer’s NBA debut was a strange one. The third overall pick finished with seven points on 2-of-15 shooting and missed all six of his 3-point attempts. However, his final stat line included 11 rebounds and five assists.
Even more interesting was his plus-minus. Boozer finished at +32, the highest mark of any player in the game.
That number does not tell the entire story of his performance; his playmaking and rebounding showed how he could impact the game beyond scoring. His five assists helped Memphis create opportunities for teammates, even as he struggled to find his own shot.
Highest plus minus by a rookie in their debut in NBA history
1) Cam Boozer (2026) – +32
2) Kendrick Nunn (2019) – +27
3) OG Anunoby (2017) – +26
3) Justise Winslow (2015) – +26
5) Cedric Coward (2025) – +24 pic.twitter.com/jADoHOt5ej— SleeperGrizzlies (@SleeperMemphis) October 22, 2026
Boozer found other ways to contribute by rebounding and getting his teammates involved. For a rookie, being able to impact a game without scoring efficiently is an encouraging sign.
The next step will be improving his shooting and becoming more comfortable against NBA defenses. One game is not enough to draw major conclusions, but Boozer showed that he can contribute in more than one area.
Memphis’ Identity
The biggest takeaway from opening night might have been how Memphis controlled the game as a team.
The Grizzlies outrebounded Utah 55-38. attempted 93 field goals compared with the Jazz’s 76. and committed 13 turnovers compared with Utah’s 18. Memphis also scored 58 points in the paint and generated 23 fast-break points.
The numbers show how the Grizzlies created more opportunities while limiting their mistakes. Winning the rebounding battle helps create additional possessions, while protecting the ball gives opponents fewer chances to capitalize on turnovers.

With Morant gone and the grizzlies moving in a new direction, Memphis needs to establish what kind of team it wants to be. The Grizzlies have promising young players such as Boozer, Zach Edey and Cedric Coward, who all are supposed to become important pieces of their future.
Opening night offered a glimpse of a team capable of using its size, rebounding and pace to create advantages. Jerome supplied the scoring, Boozer contributed on the glass and as a passer, and Memphis controlled several key areas of the game.
The challenge will be doing it consistently. One win does not establish an identity, but it gives Memphis something to build on.
A Promising Start for Memphis
The opening-night victory provided reasons for optimism beyond the final score. Jerome showed he can be the offensive hub, Boozer demonstrated that he could contribute despite a difficult shooting night, and Memphis controlled the game through rebounding and ball security.
With a full season ahead still, the Grizzlies will need to prove they can maintain these habits against different opponents.
However, if Jerome can help lead the offense, Boozer continues to develop and Memphis builds on its team-wide strengths, this opening-night performance could be an encouraging first step toward establishing a new identity.
