Celebrity Traitors fans convinced they’ve spotted ‘game-breaking’ moment that left producers scrambling

The Celebrity Traitors season 2 has been jam-packed with drama.

We’ve already had Richard E. Grant outing himself as a Traitor, Ross’s nail-biting murder in plain sight, and James Acaster’s unwilling recruitment.

Still, despite all the theatrics, there’s been a shadow cast over the show basically since the begining.

Early in the season, there were rumours that the producers were left scrambling after a supposedly ‘game-breaking twist’ no one had seen coming.

The exact source of the rumour is unclear, but if you take a quick trip to Reddit or social media, you’ll find a lot of speculation about what this moment was.

Theories have ranged from James Acaster’s filming break, or maybe Richard’s admission, while some fans think it’s yet to come.

Others, though, think we saw this ‘game-breaking moment’ in last night’s episode.

They believe the Faithful’s decision to give an unknown power to James Acaster, King Kenny, and Maya Jama (all of whom are Traitors) was the moment that left producers in a flap.

More specifically, they think the power of The Dagger (which allows a person to double-nominate someone for banishment) was a last-minute switch, and the original ability was going to be a lot more powerful.

‘I read a rumour that the game-breaking power was supposed to be the Power of the Pardon, same as the US series, which is the ability to reverse the result of the roundtable by giving a banished person a second chance to come back,’ wrote eliarbss.

‘But when the three Traitors were chosen as the three people to decide on the power, they changed it to a dagger with a double vote.

Obviously pure speculation,’ they added. ‘I assumed [this] by making the connection to the US series where they played the same scarecrow mission.’

‘It seems to be all 3 Traitors being chosen for what ended up being the double vote power, agreed keepitupstairs2.

‘The exact same task in the US series that shoots around the same time had a much more thrilling power, so it seems the producers had to scrap it for UK Celeb when all 3 were picked.’

‘Yeah, it likely was the producers having to change the “game-changing power” to a double vote dagger when all 3 traitors got picked as the most trustworthy,’ added Tusnalgas0902.

‘As others have mentioned, it seems the intention was for it to be a different thing, but with all 3 of the selected ones being Traitors, it wouldn’t work.’

5pigeo, however, had a different theory; they wrote: ‘I think it could be that the power was meant to be [the Power of the Pardon].

‘But actually I think it’s more likely they changed it because of the number of players still left in the game. I don’t think they can afford someone not getting banished.’

The Celebrity Traitors continues next Wednesday at 8pm on BBC One.
