Guwahati, Oct 17: The Gauhati High Court granted bail to suspended Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg, an accused in the Zubeen Garg death case, stating that there was little room for tampering with the evidence against him.
Sandipan, the late singer’s cousin, is the second person to secure bail after singer Amritprava Mahanta.
His bail petition was heard by Justice Rajesh Mazumdar. The High Court on Friday observed that Sandipan was arrested based on documentary and digital evidence and there was little room for tampering with the evidence.
Sandipan had been lodged in jail since October last year. He has been charged under Section 105 of BNS (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), over allegations that he had instigated the late singer to swim during the yacht party in Singapore.
Sandipan who was the co-district superintendent of police of Boko-Chhaygaon (Kamrup) was placed under suspension on October 8 in 2025, the day he was arrested.
Earlier, the high court granted bail to Mahanta on six grounds, including absence of any real implications revealed from the statements of witnesses examined by police during investigation, absence of prima facie case, and the findings of the chargesheet not receiving support from investigation materials.
Meanwhile, advocate Anan Kumar Bhuyan who represented Sandipan said that the high court was separately hearing a petition seeking to quash the chargesheet against him.
Sandipan is likely to be released after the Durga Puja holidays, as the court would remain closed from Saturday and some formalities were yet to be completed.
