Though fall manicure trends may change every year, black and other dark nail colors are always in style. Case in point: Romy Mars proved that black nail polish is a tried-and-true autumn staple for both manicures and pedicures with her Y2K look at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show this weekend. And, fan-favorite OPI shade “Lincoln Park After Dark” is getting a resurgence on TikTok. Plus, Pinterest Predicts called gothic nails one of the biggest trends of the year, and it looks like it’s in full effect now.
You probably already have a preferred black nail polish (like Essie’s Licorice, for example), but those who love dark-but-not-quite-black shades may find themselves influenced by newer trends. Over the past couple of years, dark navy blue became one of the trendiest shades of the season. With mocha brown being a beloved fashion trend over the years, dark espresso brown nails understandably have caught some wind too. More recently, red and purple shades have been popular, making burgundy and aubergine super great almost-black nail polish options for 2026.
For less expected fall picks, green is a great twist, especially with olive undertones. Gray is also a sleek option. And don't be afraid to mix it up with art too. A subtle but trendy touch is going for a chrome option, whether you pick a shimmery finish or full-on glitter. Or, take inspiration from Jisoo and go for dark French tips. You can also add your favorite Halloween motifs too. For the true minimalist though, the trick might just be picking the perfect pedi color to match or contrast your almost-black manicure.
Still not convinced? Although dark nails may feel like they’re on the complete opposite side of the spectrum from neutral nails, they actually have a lot of similarities. They go with most outfits and are pretty easy to pair with different shades, whether you're mixing up multiple shades in your manicure or just need something to complement your pedicure. And while chips in dark nail polish may seem more noticeable than neutrals, they give your look a punk tinge, which is perfect for the season.
So, if you’re ready to make the switch or need to restock your collection, here are some trending almost-black dark nail colors for fall 2026.
Espresso nails
Cool-toned brown has been a popular color in fashion and hair, and it’s a great option for nails too, especially if you want to get as close to black as possible. It’s super sleek and chic, but it has a little more dimension than a pure black shade. I personally have been wearing Essie’s “Home by 8” since September!

For a more traditional fall aesthetic, a warm brown is perfect. It also pairs well with other colors like dark red if you want to do art or mix and match shades. Londontown’s collab with Magnolia Bakery brought us a yummy rich fudge shade this season.

Like OPI’s “Bubbly Bath” and “Funny Bunny,” “Lincoln Park After Dark” has a devout fanbase for good reason. Dark purple has a lot of depth and versatility yet still has that punk vibe that a true black does.

Olive green may not come to mind first when you think about dark nail colors, but it’s one of our favorite unconventional nail colors for fall, and the deeper shades are no exception. And as we get closer to the winter and the holidays, emerald options are classics!
