A Shoprite security officer is under investigation after a video showing an elderly woman being confronted over a shoplifting incident went viral and triggered a nationwide conversation about poverty, dignity, and justice.
The footage spread rapidly across social media, showing an older woman, affectionately referred to as "gogo" by South Africans online, being caught trying to take groceries without paying. The security officer's and the person behind the camera's handling of the situation drew intense criticism for its lack of empathy, prompting Shoprite to step in. The retailer suspended the parties involved and apologised to the elderly woman for how the situation was handled.
Mandisa Tshingana rallies Mzansi to step in
Content creator Mandisa Tshingashe started a campaign on the granny's behalf to raise money and buy her groceries. Mzansi's response was overwhelming, with over R45,000 raised. The groceries were delivered to the gogo in Mdantsane.
His caption read:
"The first of many."
A nation divided over the response
While many South Africans were moved by the gogo's plight, the public reaction was far from one-sided. A number of people pointed out that the security officer was simply carrying out her duties and questioned why she was being disciplined for doing her job.
Others placed the blame firmly on the person who filmed and shared the video, arguing the matter could have been handled privately and with more discretion.
The incident also reignited a broader debate about shoplifting in the retail sector. Some commenters noted that shrinkage is a serious challenge for retailers and questioned whether sympathy should be determined by a person's age or gender.

Mzansi weighs in

"Apologise to a thief... only in South Africa."
Johnnie Shaba said:
"Yhoo but the Security was doing her job. I just blame the person who took the video and made it public. This matter would have been dealt with appropriately privately. And the words that was said by the Security Officer was totally not acceptable although she was carrying out her duties."
Abongile Mbande commented:
"The security was doing her job though, the videographer was used by God so that Gogo can get assistance, there's no need to suspend her. They must fire the videographer."
Mpho Entle shared:
"This is a difficult one. The security was trying to do the job she was hired for. The videographer wanted trending. Yes stealing is wrong, and I felt so sad for gogo and mad at the lack of empathy from the ladies. But I would suggest that Shoprite don't fire the ladies. Teach them to do their work with dignity, and also mama must apologise for stealing. Its the tough times, but its tough for everyone."
Ntemsie Dube added:
"Gogo is forgiven by the country. Shoprite, you could also do the same."
