Michael Carrick has insisted that he is not considering his future after Manchester United’s humbling 4-1 defeat to Como left him on the brink.
United were thrashed by Cesc Fabregas’ side in their third Champions League outing of the season, extending the club’s winless run to seven.
Carrick’s position as United manager is now clouded by uncertainty but as the former Red Devils reflected on his side’s performance, he declared that speculation surrounding his job was not what he was focussing on.
“I’ve not given my position any thought,” he told a press conference. “It’s [about] the supporters, I was one of them, and I didn’t like what I saw.”
Speaking to TNT Sports in a separate interview, Carrick echoed the same sentiment and said “it’s not about me” when asked if he still expected backing from the cliub.
Carrick took “100 per cent responsibility” for how the team performed but nevertheless expressed his anger and frustration at the level he witnessed, apologising to the travelling supporters for the latest dismal result.
"I'm really angry but you've got to move on and deal with what's next and see what that looks like,” he said.
"At this moment in time, there's a lot to do before the next game to get the team ready, because that was a difficult night for everybody.
"It's not about playing for me - it's about playing for this football club. It’s the responsibility what comes with it. I’m in the position, I’m responsible for the club and the supporters.
"I’m giving my absolute best all the time. My whole life's wrapped around it [Man Utd]. It might go well, it might not go so well, but I genuinely give everything I possibly can.
"It's not about me and the relationship, it's about what we all give, players, staff, for this football club.”
Carrick also responded to Bruno Fernandes’ criticism of his tactics, specifically their lack of pressing which gave Como too much time and left them somewhat toothless.
"We half pressed man-to-man in the second half and ended up conceding a goal from that,” he said.
"Whatever tactics you play, it you don't run back, you ain't going to win."
Man United’s next outing comes on Sunday as they host Marco Rose’s struggling Bournemouth in the Premier League.
