The Indianapolis Colts suffered a concerning setback Sunday afternoon when star cornerback Sauce Gardner exited their Week 6 matchup against the Tennessee Titans with a calf injury.
Gardner left the game during Tennessee’s opening possession of the second half after experiencing discomfort in his left leg.
According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, Gardner requested to leave the field before trainers began examining his left calf.
The two-time All-Pro was subsequently taken to the locker room for further evaluation.
Indianapolis officially listed Gardner as questionable to return, raising concerns about the availability of one of its most important defensive players.
The Colts held a 13-3 lead when Gardner exited during the third quarter.
Gardner’s injury raises concerns for Colts defense
Gardner eventually returned to the sideline and attempted to loosen up his injured leg, although his availability for the remainder of the contest remained uncertain.
Cam Taylor-Britt replaced Gardner at outside cornerback, leaving Indianapolis without its top defensive back.
The injury is particularly concerning because Gardner previously experienced calf problems during the 2025 season.
Those issues forced him to miss several games after joining Indianapolis in a blockbuster trade with the New York Jets.
The Colts surrendered two first-round draft selections and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell to acquire Gardner, demonstrating their commitment to strengthening the secondary.
Gardner entered Sunday’s matchup having appeared in all six games this season.
According to Colts Wire, opposing quarterbacks had completed nine of 17 passes targeting Gardner for 195 yards, while the veteran cornerback recorded three pass breakups.
His ability to match up against opposing receivers makes him an important part of Indianapolis’ defensive strategy.
Losing Gardner for an extended period could force the Colts to make significant adjustments in coverage, particularly against teams featuring explosive passing attacks.
However, the immediate concern is determining the severity of his latest injury.
With Indianapolis looking to remain competitive in the AFC South, keeping its defensive playmakers healthy will be critical.
The Colts will likely evaluate Gardner further before determining whether he can return to action.
For now, Indianapolis faces an uncomfortable waiting game involving one of its most valuable defensive players.
