Imagine preparing to represent your country in a decisive international football match.
You have spent years developing your skills, enduring injuries, sacrificing personal time and competing for the privilege of wearing your national colours.
You must remain mentally alert, physically prepared and emotionally disciplined.
Yet, while your country expects you to deliver victory, you are struggling to obtain money you have already earned.
Your attention is divided between your professional responsibilities and financial obligations that should never have become a contest.
This is not an imaginary problem.
It is part of the documented history of Nigerian football.
And it raises a fundamental question: 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝?
𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐎𝐟𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡
In Part 1, I examined the extraordinary intelligence required to perform at elite football level.
Players must process information, anticipate danger, execute complex decisions and coordinate with teammates under intense physical and psychological pressure.
But consider what happens when financial insecurity is added to those demands.
An unpaid bonus is not merely an accounting entry. For the player awaiting it, that money may represent school fees, mortgage payments, medical expenses, family support or savings for an uncertain future.
Delayed compensation introduces questions that cannot be resolved through another training session.
Will the money arrive? Who is responsible? Why was the promise broken? Must the player protest before being heard?
These questions occupy mental space that should be available for preparation, recovery and performance.
The International Olympic Committee’s 2026 mental-health consensus statement recognizes financial distress, organizational culture and leadership behaviour among factors relevant to athlete well-being.
Football authorities cannot reasonably demand complete professional concentration while repeatedly creating avoidable uncertainty over players’ livelihoods.

On 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, Nigeria’s Super Eagles suspended training in Morocco ahead of a crucial World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon.
The dispute concerned outstanding bonuses reportedly dating back to 2019.
Reuters reported that the players subsequently resumed preparations after captain William Troost-Ekong announced that the matter had been resolved.
Think about the circumstances.
A national team preparing for an important qualification match was compelled to address financial entitlements that should have been settled through routine administration.
This was neither a tactical problem nor a failure of football intelligence.
It was a governance problem.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have also faced recurring disputes over bonuses, allowances and working conditions across different administrations.
When athletes must repeatedly rely on protests, public pressure or threatened boycotts to secure promised payments, the issue extends beyond an isolated administrative mistake.
It becomes a question of institutional reliability.
Players are held accountable for missed opportunities on the field. Administrators should face equally serious scrutiny when they fail to honour established financial obligations.

The accountability problem becomes more serious when public funds are involved.
In August 2026, The Punch reported that Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) were investigating the utilization of a 𝐍𝟏𝟐 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 federal intervention fund approved in 2024 for outstanding national-team obligations.
The newspaper also reported that the Nigeria Football Federation declined a request for financial records, citing the ongoing investigations.
An investigation is not a conviction. But public money carries public accountability, and an ongoing investigation cannot substitute indefinitely for a clear accounting of expenditure.
The legitimate questions remain:
How much was received? When was it received? Which obligations were settled? Who authorized the payments? What records establish the recipients and amounts? What balances, if any, remain unexplained?
These are ordinary questions of financial stewardship.
They require bank records, payment schedules, reconciliation statements, independent auditing and enforceable oversight.
𝐍𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐨𝐱.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
The problem is not confined to Nigeria.
On 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, FIFPRO released findings from a global survey of approximately 800 women footballers.
It found that 49 percent were considering leaving football earlier than planned. Among that group, 59 percent cited financial circumstances and 46 percent psychological stress.
Across the wider surveyed population, 57 percent reported mental-health difficulties, while only 56 percent had formal employment contracts.
These figures reveal something that football administrators must confront: the commercial visibility of football does not guarantee economic security for those playing it.
And the consequences are human.
A footballer can become internationally recognizable while remaining financially vulnerable.
Applause does not pay outstanding wages.
National pride does not replace contractual protection.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐲 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
The phrase is deliberately uncomfortable.
When funds intended for players are treated as discretionary resources rather than protected obligations, football governance begins to resemble a piggy bank controlled by people other than those who earned the money.
Where corruption is established, those responsible must be held accountable. Where funds are mismanaged, the failures must be exposed and corrected. Where payments are withheld without justification, players deserve effective remedies.
The institutions should establish transparent payment timetables, independently verified accounts, protected grievance channels and meaningful player representation in decisions affecting their professional lives.
That is not a request for special treatment.
It is the minimum standard of responsible management.
This brings us back to the question of leadership.
If footballers can manage extraordinary competitive pressure, communicate across complex environments and make consequential decisions within seconds, why should their ability to participate in financial and institutional oversight be dismissed?
Understanding the game does not excuse anyone from learning administration. But excluding knowledgeable former players while tolerating repeated institutional failures is indefensible.

We must also stop taking every domestic football dispute to FIFA as though Nigeria lacks the institutions, laws and authority to address its own problems.
FIFA is not above scrutiny. Neither is CAF.
We recognize their legitimate authority over international football and the importance of protecting football associations from improper political interference. But 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲.
Where there is credible evidence of fraud, embezzlement or misappropriation of public funds, Nigeria’s lawful investigative and judicial institutions must be able to perform their duties independently, without political manipulation or intimidation.
Our sovereignty does not disappear because an official occupies a football office.
FIFA and CAF should respect legitimate criminal proceedings, just as Nigeria must respect the rules governing football’s sporting independence.

Nigeria must uphold its laws, protect due process, prosecute proven wrongdoing and recover unlawfully diverted funds.
No official should be able to invoke the international football system as a shield against accountability.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦
I spent years representing Nigeria. I understand the pride of wearing those colours and the responsibilities that accompany them.
That honour should never become a justification for denying players what they have earned.
Patriotism and professional compensation are not competing principles.
The player must deliver discipline. The coach must deliver preparation. The administrator must deliver competent stewardship.
Accountability cannot flow in only one direction.
Footballers are not disposable instruments of national celebration. They are intelligent professionals, workers, family members and citizens whose welfare deserves protection.
We have carried the pressure of expectation.
We have carried the weight of national pride.
We should not also be forced to carry the consequences of financial misconduct and administrative failure.
𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐠𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬.
For decades, Nigerian football has witnessed financial controversies, arrests, investigations and criminal proceedings. Yet a fundamental question remains unanswered: 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐬?
Those responsible for proven criminal misconduct must face prosecution, imprisonment where warranted by law, and court-ordered restitution. Money unlawfully taken from football must be recovered. Resignation, dismissal or the expiration of an official’s tenure must never become an escape from criminal accountability.
Otherwise, the revolving door continues. Administrations change. Controversies fade. Familiar practices return. And the footballers bear the consequences.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫.
And the people entrusted with administering both must finally be answerable for their decisions.
