Temple: What it is and how it may work

A temple is a wearable device designed to track changes in cerebral blood flow, or the movement of blood through the brain. Unlike a smartwatch, which typically tracks activity, heart rate and sleep, Temple uses optical sensors to measure changes linked to brain blood flow. The company calls this technology BrainFlow.

The device sits on the side of the head, between the forehead and ear, and attaches to the skin using single-use adhesive strips called Grips. It also generates an entropy score ranging from 1 to 250, intended to reflect the body’s physiological strain. Sleep, exercise, stress and caffeine may affect the score. Temple also explores how gravity and posture may influence blood flow to the brain. It is intended for wellness and research, not medical diagnosis.
