Former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has mourned the death of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, recalling the courage and resilience the elder statesman displayed following the murder of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019.
Daniel described Fasoranti’s death at the age of 100 as a monumental loss to Yorubaland and Nigeria, noting that the late nationalist lived a life defined by integrity, courage and unwavering commitment to public service.
In a condolence statement issued by his media office, the former governor recalled visiting Fasoranti in 2019 to commiserate with him over the tragic loss of his daughter.
He said he was struck by the elder statesman’s resilience and determination to continue providing leadership for the Yoruba people despite the personal tragedy.
Daniel described Fasoranti as one of the few remaining leaders deeply passionate about Nigeria’s continued existence and the advancement of the progressive cause.
He also paid tribute to the late Afenifere leader’s commitment to the values of the Omoluabi — a Yoruba ideal associated with integrity, honour, wisdom and responsible conduct.
Recalling Fasoranti’s 99th birthday lecture in Akure, Daniel had said: “Pa Fasoranti’s life is the embodiment of the Omoluabi ideal, integrity, wisdom, courage, and service to community.”
According to him, the significance of Fasoranti’s life went beyond his longevity to the immense contributions he made through selfless leadership and service to society.
Daniel said the elder statesman’s death marked the end of an era for the Awolowo political family, given his longstanding role in progressive politics and his advocacy for democracy and true federalism.
He urged Fasoranti’s family, the people of Ondo State and members of Afenifere to take solace in the enduring legacy of honour, courage and principled leadership he left behind.
The former governor prayed for the peaceful repose of Fasoranti’s soul and asked God to grant the family the strength to bear the loss.
He also expressed hope that the ideals of unity, integrity and ethical leadership championed by the late elder statesman would continue to guide the Yoruba race and inspire future generations.p
