Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi has raised concerns over the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency’s (NCCIA) failure to resolve an online fraud case in Karachi, despite a complaint being pending for the past year.
Speaking during a Senate session, Mehdi said an unidentified person in Karachi was using his photograph as a display picture on a mobile phone and contacting people to demand money in his name.
He explained that the individual had been calling people and using his identity to seek money, creating the risk of fraud and damaging his reputation.

The senator said he had submitted a complaint to the NCCIA around a year ago, but the agency had yet to resolve the matter. He criticised the agency’s Karachi office, describing the officials responsible for handling the case as highly incompetent.
Mehdi also complained that the additional director in Karachi had repeatedly delayed the matter by asking him to wait for another day. He said he had informed the NCCIA about the fraudulent activity, but his complaint had not produced any meaningful results.
The senator further claimed that he had tried to contact the newly appointed NCCIA director general but had been unable to reach him, as the official was not answering his calls.
Mehdi said he had also discussed the issue with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in an effort to secure action against the impersonator.
Responding to the matter, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry assured the senator that they will resolve the issue within two to three days.
Senator Raza Rabbani? [Correction: Rana Sanaullah] also intervened during the session, asking Mehdi to accompany him that very day so they could contact the NCCIA director general and push for a resolution.

“Senator Waqar Mehdi, please come with me today,” Rana Sanaullah said, offering to call the NCCIA director general and help resolve the case.
The matter has highlighted concerns about delays in addressing cybercrime complaints, particularly cases involving identity theft and financial fraud. Such incidents can expose unsuspecting citizens to financial losses while damaging the reputation of individuals whose identities are misused.
The senator’s complaint has renewed attention to the need for timely investigations and effective responses from cybercrime authorities. The NCCIA’s response to the allegations and the outcome of the promised action were not provided in the information shared.
