Lethbridge police launched the investigation in the fall of 2022 after receiving a report of fraudulent activity involving four local businesses.
The investigation, which police called “lengthy and complex,” found that nearly $3.5 million was embezzled or fraudulently obtained from the businesses between December 2014 and August 2019.
The man worked as an accountant, partner or held other positions within the companies that allowed him access to financial records and accounts during that time.

Police uncovered fraudulent transactions, forged documents, fraudulently obtained loans and unauthorized transfers into personal accounts. Investigators also found evidence of money laundering.
Douglas Dale Wilde was arrested on Oct. 13 without incident, police said, and has been charged with four counts each of fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000, as well as one count of money laundering.
Wilde is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 10.
