Officers from the Special Investigation Unit of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) have arrested a married couple in Welimada for allegedly defrauding job seekers of over Rs. 8.2M (Rs. 8,240,000) by promising foreign employment without valid job orders.
The suspects previously operated an agency in Dalugama, Kiribathgoda, whose official license expired on September 30 of last year. Despite the expiration, the couple resumed operations in Nugethalawa, Welimada, using the same business name to carry out the fraudulent scheme. They collected funds from the public by offering non-existent job opportunities in Serbia, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea and Romania.
According to SLBFE investigations, at least 12 formal complaints were lodged against the couple between last year and September 9 of this year. Following their arrest, the couple was produced before the Welimada Magistrate’s Court and remanded in custody until October 30.
As the husband is a resident of Kadawatha, he is also scheduled to be produced before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court on October 26 for further legal proceedings.(Newswire)
