Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to claim only their second Premier League away victory against their London rivals in 36 years, capitalising on a costly goalkeeping error and Cole Palmer’s red card.
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders punched the ball into his own net in the 77th minute before Palmer was sent off four minutes later. Mathys Tel then produced a superb solo effort to seal Tottenham’s second successive league victory.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side ended a miserable run at Stamford Bridge, where Tottenham had managed just one league win in their previous 36 visits. Their latest victory also marked their first league win over Chelsea since 2023.
Tottenham climbed to 12th in the table after building on Monday’s victory over Coventry City, which ended their wait for a first league win of the season.
The defeat was a setback for fourth-placed Chelsea, who had beaten Bournemouth and Everton in their previous two league matches. Xabi Alonso’s side were booed off at full-time after struggling to find an attacking rhythm.
With João Pedro sidelined by a late injury, Morgan Rogers was deployed as Chelsea’s central striker, but the reshaped attack lacked cutting edge.
Palmer threatened an early breakthrough after Rogers teed him up following Pedro Neto’s interception of Mateus Fernandes’ pass. The England midfielder’s curling effort was tipped over by Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.
Tottenham responded with sustained pressure, with Omar Marmoush testing Penders after meeting Andy Robertson’s cross.
Chelsea created one of the half’s best chances through a slick sequence of one-touch passes that found Jordan Henderson on the edge of the penalty area. However, Kinský pushed away the midfielder’s low drive.
The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute when Penders misjudged Mateus Fernandes’ corner and punched the ball into his own net.
Chelsea’s hopes of recovering suffered another blow when Palmer received a second yellow card in the 80th minute following a challenge on Conor Gallagher.
Tel completed Tottenham’s victory in the 87th minute, driving forward on a superb solo run before firing a low shot into the net to condemn Chelsea to their first home defeat against Spurs since 2018.
