Kathmandu, October 16
India has appointed Sudhakar Dalela as its ambassador to Nepal. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs formally announced the appointment in a statement.
The statement says he will assume his responsibilities soon.
He was previously serving as Secretary (Economic Relations) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs. This is possibly the first time India has appointed a secretary-level career diplomat from its foreign ministry as ambassador to Nepal. Besides the Foreign Secretary, the ministry has four other secretaries.
Dalela has been Secretary (Economic Relations) since 2025. Before that, he served for three years as India’s ambassador to Bhutan.
He currently oversees India’s economic diplomacy, development partnerships with Global South countries, partnership with Africa, multilateral economic relations, and matters related to new and emerging strategic technologies.
Dalela joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1993.
He began his diplomatic career at the Indian embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, he has served in Indian missions in Brasília, Chicago, Dhaka, Geneva, Thimphu and Washington, D.C.
From 2009 to 2011, he worked as a director in the Prime Minister’s Office.
His main responsibility there centred on India’s relations with its South Asian neighbours, East Asia and the Indo-Pacific region, the Gulf, the Middle East and African countries. From 2006 to 2007, he worked in the Ministry of External Affairs in the North Division, and from 2016 to 2019 he served as Joint Secretary of the same North Division. During that period, he worked closely on India’s relations with Bhutan and Nepal.
Dalela has experience in trade and economic policy. He has worked as Director for Trade Policy in the Department of Commerce in New Delhi.
He has served twice in India’s Permanent Mission to the World Trade Organisation.
He also has experience as India’s Consul General in the United States. At the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., he was Minister for Political Affairs from 2011 to 2014 and Deputy Chief of Mission from 2020 to 2022.
