US defense contractor Ideal Aerosmith has unveiled Troublemaker, a Group 3 uncrewed aircraft designed to deliver long-range strike, surveillance and decoy capabilities without relying on runways or extensive support infrastructure.
The company says the aircraft can fly for more than 10 hours, cover distances exceeding 750 nautical miles and carry payloads of up to 30 pounds, giving military operators a flexible platform for missions in contested environments.
Troublemaker is designed to serve as either an expendable one-way attack drone or a recoverable aircraft that can be reused after a mission. Ideal Aerosmith adds that the aircraft can be launched from a catapult or truck and recovered using a skid landing system.
Long-range drone built for flexible missions
According to specifications disclosed by company executive David Markert in an interview with Breaking Defense, Troublemaker has a wingspan of approximately 15 feet and a claimed range exceeding 750 nautical miles, or about 864 miles. Its payload capacity of up to 30 pounds gives operators room for different mission equipment, although Ideal Aerosmith has not publicly disclosed a unit price or detailed payload configurations.
The aircraft is intended to support intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), long-range surveillance, decoy operations and one-way strikes. Its ability to be recovered after a mission that does not require its destruction could also help reduce operating costs, depending on the recovery process and the aircraft’s actual acquisition price.
That flexibility is central to the concept of the drone. Instead of treating every aircraft as a single-use munition, operators could use the same platform for surveillance or deception missions and reserve expendable strike operations for situations where they offer a clear operational advantage. Furthermore, Ideal Aerosmith has also described Troublemaker as capable of operating in swarms.
Coordinated groups of uncrewed aircraft could distribute surveillance, deception and strike functions across multiple platforms, potentially complicating an adversary’s ability to identify and prioritize threats. The extent of its demonstrated swarm capabilities still remains unclear, though, as company has not publicly detailed the system’s autonomy, communications architecture or performance in GPS-denied and electronically contested environments.
Production capacity could determine its military value
Ideal Aerosmith says it has already built 26 Troublemaker aircraft and entered low-rate production at approximately two units per week. Markert told Breaking Defense that existing infrastructure could support production of as many as 20 aircraft per week if demand increases.
That would represent a tenfold increase over the reported current production rate, although the higher figure describes potential capacity rather than funded orders or confirmed output. Ideal Aerosmith also looks to position Troublemaker within a broader US-based defense manufacturing effort, emphasizing supply chain security, modular design and scalable production.
Markert added that Troublemaker has a Department of the Navy sponsor and that Ideal Aerosmith has responded to related government solicitations, although this does not confirm a formal procurement contract yet.
With a claimed range of more than 864 miles and no need for a conventional runway, Troublemaker could give military units more options for launching surveillance and strike missions from remote or temporary sites. Its truck- and catapult-launch options may also suit maritime and expeditionary operations, while the ability to recover and reuse the aircraft could reduce the need to replace it after every mission.
