Lisbon has been named Europe’s Leading City Destination at the 2026 World Travel Awards Europe, reinforcing Portugal’s profile as an international tourism destination.
The capital also received the award for Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination, giving the city two distinctions at the ceremony held in Montenegro.
As reported by Lusa, the awards recognise Lisbon’s performance across different areas of tourism, from its cultural attractions and visitor experiences to its role as a major cruise port.
Cruise tourism
These latest awards add to the capital’s recent success in the cruise sector.
Earlier this month, the city was named Europe’s Best Cruise Destination at the World Cruise Awards, presented during a ceremony in Jamaica.
Lisbon previously won the cruise tourism title in 2021 and 2024.
According to the Port of Lisbon Administration, this year’s result marks its third win in the category.
The port authority highlighted the contribution of tourism professionals and organisations working in the sector, as well as the hospitality that visitors experience in the Portuguese capital.
Distinctive identity
Lisbon is encouraging visitors to explore more of the surrounding region rather than focus on the city’s best-known landmarks and neighbourhoods.
The Lisbon Tourism Association (ATL) is promoting longer stays and greater interest in destinations across the metropolitan area, aiming to showcase a range of experiences while spreading tourism demand beyond the traditional hotspots.
According to the association, Lisbon’s appeal lies partly in its ability to preserve its distinctive identity while catering to visitors with different interests.
António Valle, director general of the ATL, pointed to efforts to improve the region’s tourism offering and promote its cultural heritage and diversity. He also credited the awards to cooperation between the different organisations and professionals involved in the industry.
Cultural heritage
Lisbon’s combination of heritage, culture and varied visitor experiences continues to play an important role in its international appeal.
The latest awards recognise the city’s position in the European tourism market, while its cruise sector provides an additional source of visibility among international travellers.
For local tourism authorities, the challenge now is to build on that recognition by encouraging visitors to stay longer and discover more of the metropolitan region.
