Midpage, the AI-native legal research platform that claims to be ‘10X less expensive than Westlaw’s and Lexis’s comparable products,’ and covers much of US case law now, will be accessible directly within Harvey, ‘so lawyers can find and cite authority on the same platform they use for drafting and analysis’.
A Midpage spokesperson told Artificial Lawyer: ‘The Midpage/Harvey integration is highly flexible. It allows Harvey’s Assistant to search, review, and fetch case law, statutes, regulations, and agency materials from the Midpage database. This means Harvey users can perform any type of workflow that relies on these materials, from pulling cases and monitoring dockets to cite checking and drafting any type of brief.’
Harvey already has a limited legal research data relationship with LexisNexis. The move also comes as rival Legora has ramped up its own legal research offering, such as via its acquisition of Wexler, among other steps it has made in this area.
And such a strategy makes total sense. What do the very broad legal AI platforms lack? Case law is one of those areas that’s hard to develop on your own without a lot of very focused time and effort – and Harvey have had plenty of other aspects to work on as they build outwards globally.
Below is a recent list of what Midpage covers in the US:
As to how it works, they explained: ‘Harvey customers can run Midpage searches from Harvey Assistant threads, with cited sources delivered in the final output. This connector is available to joint customers and a Midpage subscription is required to enable the connector.
‘The connector solves one of the most common requests from firms that use both products: trusted primary law research inside Harvey, without switching tools or copying results between windows.’
The integration supports a range of workflows, they added, including:
- ‘Research memos: Ask a legal question in Harvey, search Midpage, and pull the relevant opinions and key passages into the memo.
- Briefs and motions: Find supporting authority while drafting, with quoted passages drawn from the source opinion.
- Citation review: Check that the authorities cited in a draft exist and support the point they are cited for.
- Statutory and regulatory questions: Search statutes, regulations, and agency materials alongside case law when advising clients.’
Otto Zastrow, Founder and CEO of Midpage, commented: ‘Our customers keep asking for Midpage wherever they work, and many of them draft and analyze in Harvey. Now the research and the drafting happen on one platform, and every proposition can be traced to the authority behind it.’
And Nate Schlein, Head of Product Business Development at Harvey, concluded: ‘Weʼre building Harvey to be the place where legal work comes together, and legal research is core to that mission. Weʼre excited for joint customers to use Midpage directly in the flow of their work in Harvey.’
Is this a big deal?
As noted, it makes a lot of sense. But, will it have a big impact? Much depends on how much lawyers decide to work with Midpage’s output inside Harvey, rather than continue to rely on dipping in and out of different legal research providers.
If it does catch on, then this is a win-win. It will drive growth at Midpage and provide additional ‘centrality’ to Harvey as ‘the location’ where legal work lives.
