THORChain is preparing to switch Rujira back on. The protocol’s v3.21 network upgrade is designed to patch the vulnerability that froze Rujira’s App Layer in late September. If node operators sign off, trading, lending and automated trading services are expected to resume.
The fix targets block height 28,366,100. That block is estimated to land on October 23, 2026, between 13:40 and 15:20 UTC.
What broke, and what gets fixed
The problem sat inside the Rujira FIN contract, part of THORChain’s App Layer. An exploit detected on September 26 allowed unauthorized transfers of a concentrated liquidity position. That position belonged to the Rujira team.
The response came fast. On September 27, 2026, the App Layer was paused in coordination with THORChain node operators. No user funds were lost in the exploit, according to the findings.
The v3.21 upgrade is the patch. Once it activates and node operators approve, the halted Rujira products are set to come back online. The upgrade also restores support for SOL and ZEC trading, limit swaps and bRUNE staking.
The grace period gamble
To address that, Rujira plans to request a conditional 24-hour liquidation grace period. It would apply to credit positions with a loan-to-value ratio above 100% that face liquidation when services resume.
An LTV above 100% means the loan is now worth more than the collateral backing it. Under normal rules, those positions would be first in line for liquidation the instant the system restarts.
The proposed window gives those borrowers a day to top up collateral or unwind positions. The word “conditional” is doing real work here. The grace period is a proposal that Rujira intends to put forward, not a guarantee.
Why the restart matters
THORChain’s pitch has always been native cross-chain swaps without wrapped tokens. Rujira extends that idea into a fuller app layer with trading, lending and automated strategies built on top of the base protocol.
SOL and ZEC trading broadens the assets available on the platform. Limit swaps let traders set a target price instead of taking whatever the market offers. bRUNE staking gives RUNE holders another way to put tokens to work inside the ecosystem.
What this means for users and traders
Borrowers are the group with the most at stake in the first hours. Anyone holding a position above 100% LTV should treat the restart window as a deadline, not a suggestion. If the grace period is approved, it buys time. If it isn’t, liquidations could hit as soon as services resume.
Rujira caught the exploit, paused within a day, avoided user losses and shipped a targeted fix.
