The crash happened just before 9 p.m. Tuesday when the teen rode his bike into a bus shelter at 120 Avenue and 97 Street, allegedly moments after attempting to race a BMW that fled the scene and remains at large, police said.
Police have not named the 18-year-old pending the formal swearing of charges, Edmonton Police Sgt. Dan Tames said in an email. The teen is facing counts of dangerous driving causing death, as well as three counts of dangerous driving causing injury.

According to police, the teen was riding a 2004 Yamaha motorcycle and began to race the BMW near 97 Street and 118 Avenue, a major intersection in north central Edmonton. Two blocks later, he mounted the curb on the east side of the street and continued on the sidewalk before striking the bus shelter.
Four people were struck by the bike, including a 21-year-old man who later died in hospital. A 46-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman also suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The woman’s 10-month-old baby, meanwhile, had “potentially life-threatening” injuries and was in hospital at last report, police said.
The motorcyclist was not seriously injured. Police continue to seek tips about the location of the BMW involved in the race.
More to come.
