Black Consciousness Day honors Zumbi dos Palmares, who fought slavery, and in 2026 the Brazilian holiday falls on Friday 20 November. It is the first Friday since the day became a national holiday, so most workers get a three-day weekend.
For US visitors, Black Consciousness Day means closed bank branches, no trading on the São Paulo stock exchange and busier travel routes. This guide explains what shuts, what stays open and how to plan around the weekend.

What Black Consciousness Day Is and Why It Matters
Black Consciousness Day marks the death of Zumbi dos Palmares on 20 November 1695, according to the federal Palmares Cultural Foundation. The foundation calls his settlement the most populous quilombo in Latin America, meaning a community founded by people who escaped slavery.
Palmares formed around 1600 and resisted Portuguese and Dutch attacks through the 17th century, Jornal de Brasília reported on 20 November 2025. Brazilians today remember Zumbi as a symbol of resistance to slavery.
Law 12,519, signed on 10 November 2011, created the National Day of Zumbi and Black Consciousness. The law set the day each year on 20 November, the anniversary of his death.
Law 14,759, signed on 21 December 2023, then declared 20 November a national holiday. Before that, only some states and more than 1,200 cities observed the day as a holiday, Jornal de Brasília said.
Activists preferred this date to 13 May, the day slavery was abolished, Jornal de Brasília reported. The idea first appeared in 1971, when Black students and activists in Porto Alegre pushed for it.
Americans may find a parallel in Juneteenth, since both are days of remembrance that are also days off. The comparison is imperfect, because Zumbi’s date marks a leader’s death rather than the end of slavery.
What Closes and What Stays Open
On Black Consciousness Day, bank branches stay closed to the public, as on every national holiday, InvestNews reported on 13 January 2026. InvestNews, citing Febraban, the banking federation, says cash machines in self-service areas and banking apps still work.
Withdraw cash and sort out your cards on Thursday 19 November, before branches close for the long weekend. Utility bills due on the holiday can be paid without a surcharge on the next business day, InvestNews added.
B3, the São Paulo stock exchange, holds no trading on Friday 20 November or Monday 2 November, its 2026 calendar shows. It also stays shut on Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Thursday 31 December.
Pharmacies, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, petrol stations and transport services may stay open, O Povo reported on 22 September 2026. Shops and shopping centers may also open, subject to local rules and each sector’s labor agreements.
Local rules and labor agreements vary, so call ahead before planning a shopping trip. Workers who are scheduled on the holiday are owed extra pay or time off, O Povo said.

A Long Weekend and a Second Holiday
Black Consciousness Day on Friday 20 November, with Saturday 21 and Sunday 22, gives most office workers three days off. Thursday 19 November stays a normal working day unless an employer grants a bridge day, O Povo reported.
Each employer or public body decides whether to grant that bridge day, which would stretch the break to four days. If you travel then, book early and allow extra time at roads and airports.
Trips over long holidays usually cost more because demand for flights and lodging rises, Quanto Custa Viajar wrote on 29 September 2025. Book early if you want a specific hotel or flight.
An earlier holiday comes first, since Finados, All Souls’ Day, falls on Monday 2 November 2026. Families visit cemeteries across Brazil that day, and bank branches close, InvestNews reports.
Together with Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November, that makes another long weekend. Sunday 15 November, the Proclamation of the Republic, falls on a weekend and adds no extra day off.
For the 2027 calendar, see our guide to Brazil public holidays in 2027. Black Consciousness Day lands on a Saturday that year, so it adds no long weekend.
Where to Go and What to See
São Paulo’s Black Consciousness Day march drew its 22nd edition to MASP, the art museum on Avenida Paulista. It began around noon on 20 November 2025 with a circle of followers of Afro-Brazilian religions, Brasil de Fato reported.
Marches are public street events, so keep valuables hidden and follow local advice. Our São Paulo city guide lists neighborhoods, transport and local advice.
In Rio de Janeiro, the Valongo Wharf in the old port area was built from 1811 for enslaved Africans arriving in Brazil. UNESCO listed the site as World Heritage in 2017 and estimates that 900,000 Africans arrived in South America through it.
In Alagoas state, the Quilombo dos Palmares Memorial Park stands on the Serra da Barriga hill in União dos Palmares. The town is about 76 kilometers (47 miles) from Maceió, and the Palmares foundation says more than 10,000 visitors come each November.
Mariah Carey plays the outdoor area of Farmasi Arena in Rio on Saturday 21 November, with tickets sold by Eventim. Folhapress reported on 10 August 2026 that Rio tickets run from R$495 (about US$98) for the floor to R$1,895 (about US$375) for VIP.
That Rio show is one of three Brazilian dates on her Christmas tour, which we cover in our Mariah Carey Brazil guide. Our Rio de Janeiro city guide covers neighborhoods and getting around.

Tips for US and Foreign Visitors
The State Department says US citizens need a visa for any trip to Brazil, approved before they leave. Your passport must be valid on your date of entry and have at least one blank page.
Brazil’s e-visa application portal says consular posts may take up to 10 business days to process an application. It recommends applying at least two months ahead, so start now; see our Brazil visa guide for US citizens.
The State Department rates Brazil Level 2, exercise increased caution, and warns of violent crime in cities day and night. It adds that assaults, including with drugs placed in drinks, are common in Rio de Janeiro.
It tells travelers to avoid favelas, informal hillside neighborhoods, and tells US officials to skip municipal buses, especially at night. Use ride-hailing apps or taxis booked through your hotel after dark, including on Black Consciousness Day.
The emergency numbers are 190 for police, 191 for highway police, 192 for an ambulance and 193 for the fire department. The State Department says 193 is also the fastest way to summon roadside help.
This guide converts reais at 5.05 to the US dollar, the rate on Tuesday 20 October 2026. Your card issuer may add a foreign transaction fee, so ask before you travel.
What Is Not Confirmed Yet
As of Tuesday 20 October, we found no announced route or start time for São Paulo’s 2026 Black Consciousness Day march. Last year’s noon start at MASP is only a guide.
We also found no published opening hours for museums and heritage sites on the holiday, including the Valongo Wharf. Call or check each site’s official page before you go.
No airline, bus operator or highway agency had published demand forecasts for the weekend when we checked. Public transport timetables and shopping center hours for Friday 20 November are also not yet public.
Eventim’s ticket page was not open to our check, so seat availability for Mariah Carey in Rio is not confirmed. Buy only through Eventim or the arena’s box office.
Some employers may announce a bridge day for Thursday 19 November in the coming weeks. That decision is not national, so ask your host or workplace.
