The Rotary Club of Makanga has donated essential children’s items to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital as staff highlight challenges in caring for children with diarrhoea and malnutrition.
The Rotary Club of Makanga-in-formation has donated essential children’s items to the paediatric department at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in an effort to improve care for young patients.
The donation is intended to support maternal and child health services and ease pressure on health workers operating with limited equipment and supplies.
The club’s president, Micheal Kyakashari, said they chose to support the paediatric department because it is among the hospital’s most needy units.
Pidson Kamugisha, a nursing officer in the hospital’s paediatric department, said many of the children admitted to the ward suffer from diarrhoea and malnutrition.
“The ward receives between six and 10 patients daily, with monthly admissions ranging from 150 to 200 patients, who spend varying days in the ward depending on their illness,” Kamugisha said.
He added that the department sometimes lacks nutritional feeds for children with malnutrition to take home after discharge.
“Many children return with malnutrition a few days after being discharged,” Kamugisha said.
Pastor Christine Barigye Tina Tukakira, who served as the chief launcher of the donation, said the initiative had highlighted the needs of vulnerable people in the community and the importance of extending support to those who need it.
