Türkiye is opening a new chapter in its energy history with the deployment of the Osman Gazi floating production platform to the Black Sea, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday in a video message.
“Today, we are opening a brand-new page in our energy history. We are sending Osman Gazi, essentially a floating industrial facility, off to its duty station in the Black Sea,” Erdogan said in a video message sent to a ceremony marking the platform’s departure from Filyos Port in Zonguldak province.
Erdogan said he had announced in July 2024 that Türkiye would acquire its first floating production platform. In May 2025, the platform, named Osman Gazi, was sent from Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul to Filyos.
He described the platform as the first production facility of the Blue Homeland, Türkiye’s maritime vision under its Century of Türkiye initiative.
“Osman Gazi is the first factory of the Blue Homeland, the maritime counterpart of our Century of Türkiye vision,” he said.
Erdogan expressed his hope that the platform would provide beneficial services to the country and its people, thanked everyone who contributed to the project, and wished success to the personnel who will work aboard it.
Production capacity and technical specifications
Equipped with 21 different units, the platform will process natural gas extracted from wells in the Sakarya Gas Field and transport it to Filyos through subsea pipelines, Erdogan said.
“Natural gas production in the Black Sea will double to 20 million cubic meters per day, and starting in 2027, one in every three households will use our domestic natural gas,” he added.
Measuring 298.5 meters (980 feet) in length, 56 meters (approximately 184 feet) in width and 29.5 meters (approximately 97 feet) in depth, Osman Gazi will accommodate 140 personnel, Erdogan said, describing it as a floating fortress of energy.
According to information shared by the Communications Directorate on Turkish social media platform NSosyal, the platform will operate around the clock at its designated location in the Black Sea for 20 years. It will deliver processed natural gas to the national grid in a form ready for use.
The platform is expected to contribute $3.5 billion annually to the economy. With its commissioning, the Sakarya Gas Field’s total production target will reach 20 million cubic meters per day, enough to meet the natural gas needs of 8 million households, according to the directorate.
Platform’s departure and operational targets
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar spoke at a ceremony at Filyos Port marking the departure of the Osman Gazi floating production platform for its operational destination in the Sakarya Gas Field.
Bayraktar also stressed that the platform would increase daily gas production at the field to 20 million cubic meters in 2027, describing it as Türkiye’s first floating natural gas processing facility.
The Communications Directorate also announced that the platform would begin operations following the ceremony.
An accompanying graphic said the platform would be dispatched from Filyos, Zonguldak, to its designated location in the Black Sea, where it is expected to remain in service for two decades.
