MONROVIA, October 22, 2026 – Liberian health authorities have ordered heightened disease surveillance and stricter infection prevention measures at health facilities, border entry points and public institutions nationwide following reports of a confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria.
According to an official release, the directive takes immediate effect and is intended to strengthen Liberia’s preparedness against the potential spread of Ebola and other infectious diseases.
The authorities have instructed all health facilities, border officials, public institutions and other relevant establishments to enforce Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures to minimize the risk of transmission.
Under the directive, institutions must establish functional handwashing stations equipped with soap and water and provide appropriate hand sanitizers at their entrances.
Health personnel and designated officials are also required to screen individuals for symptoms and assess relevant travel and exposure histories in accordance with national public health guidelines.
The release further calls for strict compliance with hand hygiene protocols and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment by healthcare workers and other personnel.
Facility administrators, county health authorities, border officials and institutional managers have been directed to ensure full implementation of the measures and promptly report any challenges requiring additional support.
The authorities emphasized that the preventive measures are necessary to strengthen public health surveillance and ensure early detection and response to potential infectious disease threats.
Meanwhile, the public has been urged to remain vigilant, observe recommended preventive practices and cooperate with health authorities.
“The public is encouraged to remain vigilant, adhere to recommended preventive measures, and cooperate fully with health authorities in protecting our communities,” the release stated.
The directive underscores Liberia’s efforts to maintain preparedness against Ebola, a highly infectious disease that previously caused significant loss of life during the 2014–2016 West African epidemic.
Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health confirmed the imported Ebola case in Abuja on October 20. The World Health Organization subsequently reported that 44 contacts had been identified for monitoring.
