WASHINGTON, DC — A group of 42 Afrikaner refugees, representing 18 families, landed at Washington Dulles International Airport on the evening of Tuesday, 20 October 2026, as part of the Trump administration's ongoing resettlement programme for South Africans.
A video interview recorded at the airport captured one of the newly arrived women describing the fear and restriction she had lived under in South Africa, and her relief at finally being in the United States.
Woman describes life of fear in South Africa
Speaking to a reporter from The Daily Wire, the woman said daily life in South Africa had been marked by constant anxiety. She added that she was looking forward to having freedom in the US.
"We don't have to be scared, check everything the whole time," she said, adding that her family had largely limited themselves to church, home, and school.
"We were very secluded. Now I want to live. We want to do stuff."
She said her sister had already relocated earlier in the year and had been making the most of life in the country.
"My sister is already here from April this year, and they've been doing stuff. So I'm very excited about that. Just live freely," she said.
