The San Francisco 49ers made NFL history on Oct. 19, defeating the Washington Commanders 23-17 at Levi’s Stadium to claim their 56th victory on Monday Night Football. The win moved San Francisco past the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most victories in the program’s history.
The milestone came during an undefeated start to the 2026 season. San Francisco improved to 6-0, extending its early momentum while surviving a second-half rally that threatened to turn a comfortable lead into a disappointing defeat.
Although the final score suggested a close contest, the 49ers controlled much of the opening half before Washington fought back. San Francisco’s defense ultimately delivered the decisive stops needed to secure the historic victory.
The 49ers claim the Monday Night Football record
San Francisco entered the Week 6 matchup with an opportunity to move ahead of Pittsburgh in Monday Night Football victories. The 23-17 result delivered that distinction, giving the franchise sole possession of the NFL record with 56 wins.
The achievement reflects the 49ers’ sustained presence in prime-time football across multiple eras. From their championship teams to their more recent playoff runs, the franchise has repeatedly appeared in high-profile matchups that attract national attention.
However, the record is specifically about victories on Monday Night Football, not total NFL wins or Super Bowl championships. That distinction makes the milestone a measure of the franchise’s performance in one of the league’s longest-running television traditions.
San Francisco builds an early advantage
The 49ers established control in the first half, scoring 20 points while limiting Washington to a field goal. Their opening performance created a substantial cushion and forced the Commanders to pursue a comeback after halftime.
Quarterback Brock Purdy helped guide the offense through productive possessions, while San Francisco’s ability to sustain drives kept pressure on Washington’s defense. The hosts combined efficient passing with contributions from their established playmakers to build their lead.
San Francisco’s opening-half advantage was especially important because Washington later found greater offensive rhythm. Without those early scoring drives, the 49ers would have faced a much more difficult path to preserving their unbeaten record.
Christian McCaffrey makes his presence felt
Running back Christian McCaffrey played an important role in the victory, providing production as both a runner and receiver. His ability to contribute in different phases gave San Francisco another way to attack Washington’s defense.
McCaffrey finished with 117 scrimmage yards and 2 touchdowns. His versatility helped the 49ers establish their early advantage and gave the offense a reliable option when it needed to move the chains.
His performance also highlighted why San Francisco can build an offense around more than one type of play. McCaffrey’s contributions as a receiver and runner create matchup challenges, although the team’s ability to distribute the workload will remain important throughout a demanding season.
Washington’s comeback puts the record-setting win at risk
The Commanders refused to let the contest end without a fight. After trailing 20-3 at halftime, Washington scored twice in the second half and reduced the deficit to 23-17, putting San Francisco under pressure late in the game.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels completed 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns. His passing production helped Washington recover from its difficult start and gave the visitors a chance to challenge the 49ers in the closing minutes.
The rally ultimately fell short, but it exposed weaknesses in San Francisco’s second-half execution. The offense lost momentum, and the defense had to deliver crucial plays to protect a lead that had once appeared comfortable.
Malik Mustapha delivers when the 49ers need him
Safety Malik Mustapha emerged as a key figure during Washington’s late push. With the Commanders threatening to complete the comeback, he helped prevent the visitors from turning their improved offensive performance into a game-changing score.
Mustapha broke up a fourth-down pass in the closing stages, denying Washington a crucial opportunity to keep its hopes alive. The defensive play demonstrated the importance of execution when the margin for error becomes extremely small.
The defensive line then provided the final answer. Romello Height and Keion White combined to sack Daniels with 6 seconds remaining, ending Washington’s last opportunity and preserving San Francisco’s unbeaten start.
Injuries create new questions for San Francisco
The victory came with a significant concern involving wide receiver Mike Evans, who left the game shortly before halftime after aggravating an existing Achilles problem. His departure reduced San Francisco’s receiving options and coincided with a noticeable decline in offensive production during the second half.
Evans recorded a team-high 94 receiving yards on 3 catches before leaving the contest. His performance highlighted his importance to the offense, but his availability for San Francisco’s Week 7 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons remains uncertain.
The 49ers’ injury report listed Evans with rib and Achilles issues, and he did not participate in practice on October 21 or 22. San Francisco will need to manage its receiving depth while attempting to maintain the consistency that helped produce its 6-0 start.
A historic milestone comes with a lesson
The franchise now has another achievement to celebrate, but the narrow finish also serves as a reminder that early leads are never guaranteed. Washington’s rally showed how quickly a game can change when an offense finds its rhythm and a defense struggles to get off the field.
For San Francisco, the immediate priority is to turn its undefeated start into sustained success. The record-setting victory strengthens the team’s early-season position, while the late-game defensive stops offer a foundation to build on as competition intensifies.
Fun fact: In 2015, while playing for Stanford, McCaffrey recorded 3,864 all-purpose yards in a single season
