KUCHING: A teacher was injured while trying to wrest a sharp object from a student at an international school here this morning.
According to a notice issued by the school to parents, guardians, staff and students, the incident was isolated and no other injuries were reported.
The student was subdued before being taken to the principal's office and placed under the school's supervision.
Police arrived shortly afterwards and took over the handling of the incident. The student's parents were also contacted by the school.
The injured female teacher received treatment after the school called for an ambulance before she was taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, all students near the scene were immediately evacuated to ensure their safety.
The school said the student had not approached other students and that no students were in danger throughout the incident.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all students and staff, while prioritising open communication to ensure the school community received accurate information.
Meanwhile, Sarawak acting police commissioner Deputy Commissioner Saifullizan Ishak confirmed the incident in a statement, clarifying that a penknife, not an axe, was involved.
He said this following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing the incident, in which an axe was seen.
