One sideline reaction became the loudest storyline from Washington’s latest loss.
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn told reporters after the 23-17 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers that he was fully aware his offense faced fourth down in the second quarter. He addressed it roughly 60 minutes after the final whistle.
Quinn answered without hesitation.
“I definitely knew it was fourth down,” Quinn said.
Down 13-3, the Commanders faced fourth-and-2 at the 49ers’ 13-yard line. A touchdown attempt through the air fell incomplete, and a flag for illegal shift came out against Washington.
ESPN’s broadcast caught Quinn on the sideline moments later with what looked like a surprised reaction. Pardon My Take posted the clip on X, and some viewers who read his lips took it to mean he hadn’t known the down.
His explanation centered on the penalty. He said someone on the headset asked whether the kicking unit could still come out after the flag, and he was explaining that the ball would go back to San Francisco regardless.
Being aggressive was the plan all along, Quinn explained. “So, now we were going for it. We knew we had to go for some fourth downs to be bold in the game. I didn’t think it was gonna be a 17-14 game. I probably thought it was gonna need 28, 30 to score, you know, to go win it.
“And so it was by design that we were gonna go, but I knew what happened,” Quinn said, adding that “Jayden [Daniels] saw the foul, too.”
To some viewers, Quinn’s expression read more like surprise than confirmation, and he had ample time between the final whistle and the podium to settle on an answer.
Three points wouldn’t have covered the final margin on their own, since Washington fell by six.
The defeat dropped the Commanders to 1-4-1. At that pace, Quinn’s fourth-down calls will draw a harder look every week, and his job security will face the same scrutiny.
