Miemia gets GH¢1.2 million CHPS facility after decades without suitable health infrastructure

The Ahanta West Municipal Assembly has commissioned a GH¢1.2 million Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) facility at Miemia in the Western Region to improve access to healthcare for residents and neighbouring communities.

The facility, funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund, includes nurses’ quarters and addresses a long-standing need for suitable healthcare infrastructure in the community.

For more than two decades, an old community centre served as Miemia’s only health post. Residents, particularly pregnant women and nursing mothers, often had to travel long distances to access basic healthcare.

The new facility is expected to ease that burden by bringing healthcare services closer to the community.

The Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, said the investment reflected the importance of protecting lives and improving access to healthcare.

“There’s a lot that we want to do, but we chose this one because we know health is life. It's important that we save lives before any other thing comes in,” she said.

Residents welcomed the facility, describing it as a vital intervention, and expressed gratitude to the government for addressing a need that had persisted for years.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Ahanta West, Ebenezer Kofi Aidoo, said the Assembly was exploring additional funding sources to extend healthcare infrastructure to other underserved communities.

Beyond allocations from the District Assemblies Common Fund, he said the Assembly was considering using its internally generated funds (IGF) to support the construction of more CHPS facilities.

“Apart from the main funding source that is the District Assembly Common Fund, we are trying to see that at least the IGF and all that can also help in building the CHPs,” he said.

According to Mr Aidoo, procurement processes have begun for two additional CHPS compounds at Chavene and Hotopo under the assembly’s 2026 plans.

He said the assembly was also looking at providing facilities for two more communities in its 2027 budget, with the possibility of supporting further projects through internally generated funds.

The assembly expects these planned investments to extend access to community-based healthcare to more communities by 2028.
