Walmart's terms for AI agents are live today; the profiles and the gateway behind them are not. Approval by default and a returns process that covers agent mistakes are what the retailer is really putting between an agent and the cart.
The industry divide in agentic commerce has sharpened into a concrete split: while Amazon has begun blocking AI agents from making purchases, Walmart is attempting to standardize their access. At the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco, Walmart CEO John Furner detailed this shift through the Oct. 21 announcement, as noted in TechCrunch’s report. Yet the reality of this rollout is staggered. The company’s terms for AI agents are published and effective now, Agent Profiles are launching in the next month, and the Agent Gateway begins as a beta for companies and developers. No general-availability date was given for either tool beyond that wording.
Read against the broader market, that staggering matters. Recent industry data suggests that while 67% of retailers plan to open their catalogs to agents within two years, our read of that same gap shows the distance between announced intentions and the structured data readiness agents actually need. Walmart is trying to close part of it by moving agents off the fragile business of navigating standard web interfaces. Through a dedicated server, the retailer aims to let an agent shop a customer’s usual items without the customer handing over their broader purchase history or personal data. Current retailer postures still leave agents shopping as if they were people – the same browser-driven path Walmart calls slow and error-prone – and Walmart’s own pilot data put direct agent checkouts at roughly one-third the conversion of click-outs, as we reported.
Walmart’s terms draw a firm boundary between the software and the customer’s money. Agents are prohibited from accessing payment-card information and cannot modify existing payment methods. Purchases require customer approval by default, though a customer can set a spending limit for an agent instead. Crucially, Walmart has clarified that its standard returns process applies, including if an agent doesn’t act as intended. Any agent that violates these terms will be blocked from the site. The framework treats an AI agent like an authorized cardholder on a credit account, moving the burden of trust onto the customer’s own configuration.
Walmart says an agent gets a profile the first time you use it to shop through the gateway, and the customer authorizes and links it by signing into their Walmart account. The welcome-mat posture is not purely rhetorical: Walmart already serves shoppers through conversational commerce integrations with Muse, ChatGPT and Gemini, which makes this read as an extension of existing infrastructure rather than a gesture.
The contrast with Amazon’s block is real, but it is not a binary choice between open and closed systems. Walmart is not offering an open-ended invitation; it is offering a controlled environment with Walmart holding the switch. The company maintains that it prices products, not people, so an agent sees the same prices a human would.
What decides this is adoption of the gateway beta and how the profiles behave once the public has them. If the integration proves too cumbersome for developers, or if approval flows hold conversion down, the welcome mat gets pulled. Walmart is betting that managing agents inside written terms is the future of retail rather than refusing them at the door. The bet is only testable once the tools exist.
