Kumho Engineering & Construction (002990.KS) said on the 12th that it has filed a patent application for a smart safety monitoring system it developed in-house to strengthen safety management at construction sites.
The system lets managers track workers' locations and hazard zones in real time, while workers can also recognize risks through their own smartphones and alert managers directly when needed. Its key feature is that it requires no separate location-tracking devices or smart bands, making it simple to deploy at sites through a smartphone app.
The system was developed to improve safety management at the Yeoncheon National Cemetery construction project, which Kumho E&C is building. The site spans about 959,000 square meters and includes large sedimentation basins and heavy equipment work zones, creating a strong need to track worker locations and control access to hazard areas. That prompted the company to begin developing a system for more efficient safety management.
Kumho E&C is also securing intellectual property rights alongside the system's development. It completed program copyright registration for the smart safety management system on Sept. 29 and filed a patent application on Sept. 22 for a "method and device for work site safety monitoring based on smartphone built-in sensors."
The company plans to expand the system to building and civil engineering sites. It has completed advance manager registration at 64 sites in total, including 35 building sites and 29 civil engineering and plant sites. It plans to continue upgrading the system by adding features such as automatic attendance tracking using geofencing, a technology that sets virtual boundaries to automatically detect entry and exit.
"We will continue to actively use smart technology to strengthen safety management capabilities at our sites and build a more comprehensive safety management system," an official at Kumho E&C said.
