The Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation has stated the importance of understanding institutional realities and building the necessary support to sustain reforms in Nigeria.
The executive vice chairman of the foundation, Ofovwe Aig-Imoukhuede, stated this at the just concluded 2026 Public Sector Reform Convening, themed: “Unblocking Reform: From Design to Delivery.”
Aig-Imoukhuede said effective reform leadership requires a clear understanding of institutional contexts, a willingness to listen to those affected by reforms and deliberate efforts to build the support needed for successful implementation.
Also speaking, the Lagos state Head of Service and keynote speaker, Olabode Shuaeeeb Agoro, highlighted the importance of addressing underlying challenges that hinder reform implementation during a panel session titled: “Advancing Reform: Building Buy-In and Coalitions.”
Agoro noted that resistance to reforms could stem from gaps in skills, resources or understanding.
He said leaders must communicate the purpose of reforms, align institutions with their objectives and provide the resources and capabilities required for effective implementation.
He said leaders must also ensure that accountability mechanisms remain in place long after reforms have been implemented.
“People always feel better if they are carried along. Nobody wants to feel that they don’t matter. So it is always important to engage at all levels,” he said.
The convening builds on the foundation’s ongoing engagement with its alumni network, a growing community of public sector reform leaders across the continent.
The event also identified stakeholder engagement, communication, organisational culture and collaboration as key factors influencing the success of reform implementation.
