It was a goal-packed affair at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. Phil Foden, back from suspension, struck in the 19th minute for the home team. Two minutes later, Ipswich's Daizen Maeda equalised.
Then City star Erling Braut Haaland stepped forward.
The Norwegian scored with a header to make it 2-1 and with his left foot to make it 3-1. In the closing stages of the match, he celebrated a hat-trick after scoring to make it 4-1, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review.
In the 90th minute, the away team's Zian Flemming reduced the deficit with a penalty.
Manchester City have won all their matches so far and lead the league with 21 points.
Manchester City have had 115 charges brought against them. The Premier League has ruled that the club breached more than 100 of them after an independent commission investigated City. The club is guilty of all charges relating to financial regulations.
The commission has concluded that the club artificially inflated its revenues and reduced its costs by a total of £900 million between 2009 and 2018, to give the appearance of complying with financial rules.
Between 2009 and 2018, City won the league three times, the FA Cup twice and the League Cup four times.
Any sanctions will be decided by the same independent commission that reviewed City. Exactly when this will happen is not known.
City's former chairman, David Bernstein, has said the club should be relegated from the top flight.
