FIVE police officers were injured when suspected attackers hurled improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at a security compound in Bannang Sata district in Thailand’s insurgency-hit southern province of Yala yesterday.
The attack occurred at about 6.40pm in Village 3 of Bannang Sata subdistrict, targeting police living quarters and a security checkpoint as officers rested after performing Maghrib prayers.
A spokesman for Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 (ISOC 4) said five officers were injured, while one of the devices thrown towards the checkpoint failed to explode.
The injured officers were identified as Sergeant Major Harun Maseng, Sergeant Major Ibrahim Tinguseng, Sergeant Major Maroning Hajeena, Sergeant Major Abdulbasae Jena and Sergeant Amri Toedeng.
All five were taken to Bannang Sata District Hospital for further treatment.
“Initial reports indicated that several unidentified individuals threw two pipe bombs into the security force compound, targeting police accommodation and the security checkpoint,” the spokesman said.
Security personnel cordoned off the scene and began investigating, including reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to identify those responsible.
Personnel from three security agencies have also stepped up security around the compound to monitor the situation and prevent further attacks. - October 16, 2026
