MCMC investigates individuals behind an allegedly insulting edited image of Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim circulated on Threads, with the content removed
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating those responsible for creating and spreading content allegedly insulting His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on the Threads platform.
In a statement today, MCMC said it had contacted Meta, the platform’s provider, following the circulation of an edited image of Sultan Ibrahim containing insulting elements.
“Following this, the content was taken down, while the account involved was also blocked from being accessed,” it said.
MCMC said further action could be taken if any laws had been breached, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).
It said the Commission would continue working with platform providers to ensure appropriate action was taken in accordance with community guidelines and applicable laws.
MCMC also advised the public against uploading or resharing the content to prevent it from spreading further.
The public can submit complaints through the reporting function on Threads, the MCMC Complaints Portal at https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my or the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) official channels for further action.
