Stephen Curry has admitted the Golden State Warriors face a difficult situation after Kristaps Porzingis was reportedly sidelined indefinitely with a health issue that has left him considering retirement.
The Latvian centre was expected to play a key role for Golden State this season after signing a two-year, $40 million contract extension during the offseason.
However, recurring symptoms of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) have disrupted those plans, leaving the Warriors uncertain about when, or whether, he will return.

Speaking after Golden State’s 127-105 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers, Curry acknowledged the impact Porzingis’ situation has had on both the player and the team.
“It’s a hard one for all reasons,” Curry said, as reported by ESPN’s Anthony Slater. “Personally, first and foremost. Then us as a team…We always said availability was a big factor for our team. It’s no secret that (center) spot was an important one for us, especially with the skillset.”
The four-time NBA champion also stressed the importance of considering Porzingis’ wellbeing rather than focusing solely on basketball.
“It’s hard to talk about it without keeping the humanity in mind,” Curry said.
He added that the Warriors had seen what their roster could achieve with Porzingis involved but now needed to find a way forward.
“We have to overcome that obviously, but we’d love to have him here,” Curry said.
Curry also revealed he had not spoken to Porzingis since the start of training camp, underlining the uncertainty surrounding the situation.
Golden State confirmed that discussions involving Porzingis, the franchise and his representatives would remain private. The organisation also said it was not expecting the centre to be around the team in the immediate future.
Porzingis reportedly met with Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy and medical chief Rick Celebrini to discuss his future, with retirement among the possibilities being considered.
The Warriors are also reportedly exploring potential trade options, although a buyout or an application for a league exception have also been discussed.
For now, Golden State must prepare without a player who was expected to strengthen its centre position. Further updates will depend on Porzingis’ health and the outcome of discussions with the franchise.
