“How much money do the Gophers have?”
In the modern era of college athletics, everyone wants to know how much money a team has to spend on its roster, but very few know the actual number.
Matt Norlander and Isaac Trotter of CBS Sports released a report Wednesday detailing the estimated roster cost for every power conference men’s basketball program in 2026-27. Minnesota’s place on the list paints an interesting picture.
A deep dive with @MattNorlander into how much each high-major basketball roster costs. It ranges from $5 million to over $25 million.

The top dawgs: Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisville, Michigan, UNC, St. John’s, Tennessee, Texas and Texas Techhttps://t.co/gpQDvP1YDh
The report opted to include every fifth-year player who’s still battling for eligibility for the 2026-27 season. This is significant for the Gophers, as Cade Tyson will presumably be one of their big-money players if he’s eligible this season.
Are these numbers gospel? No, and there’s probably a good chance some teams provided inaccurate numbers to benefit their negotiating and fundraising efforts. Still, it’s a more reasonable set of figures to go off than message board rumors.
As a surprise to nobody who follows college basketball closely, the top tier of teams spending more than $20 million this cycle includes Duke, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Illinois, Texas, Tennessee, Michigan, St. John’s, Texas Tech and Louisville. This shows just how much roster spending has gotten out of control and that there’s a whole different tier for true championship contenders in the sport.
Below the top spenders are tiers ranging from just under $20 million to $12.1 million, followed by the $10 million to $12 million tier, where the Gophers land. Other teams in Minnesota’s tier include Clemson, Nebraska, Syracuse, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Georgia, NC State and TCU.
Every other team in the Gophers’ tier made the NCAA Tournament last season except Syracuse, which is historically a basketball-first school. Minnesota was rumored to have one of the smallest NIL budgets in power conference hoops when Ben Johnson was the head coach, but that doesn’t appear to be the case with Niko Medved at the helm.
Notable Big Ten programs such as Purdue, Iowa, Northwestern, Rutgers, Washington and Penn State are all in the tier below Minnesota, with rosters reportedly costing less than $10 million.
What does this tell us? It says that Minnesota, Medved and the program’s top boosters are serious about competing in men’s basketball. The Gophers probably don’t have the resources to build a $20 million roster overnight, but they have more than enough resources to be competitive, and Medved has proven that.
Financial resources don’t always equate to having a talented roster. You still need to evaluate players and coach them at a high level. Minnesota’s place among college basketball programs in roster spending should be enough evidence that a return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018-19 is a matter of when, not if.
