Rangers International of Enugu will also represent Nigeria on the continental stage when they host Algeria’s MC Alger on Sunday, October 18. Their NPFL Match Day 9 fixture against Bendel Insurance has been postponed to accommodate the Champions League engagement.
The first-leg matches of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round are scheduled for October 16–18, with the return legs taking place from October 23–25. The 16 clubs that emerge victorious from the ties will advance to the group stage, scheduled to begin at the end of November.
NPFL Match Day 9 fixtures
The NPFL weekend action began on Friday, October 16, with Shooting Stars scheduled to host Ranchers Bees at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, with kick-off fixed for 6 p.m.
Saturday’s programme features two encounters, beginning with Doma United against Kun Khalifat FC at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe at 4 p.m.
Kwara United will also host Abia Warriors at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin at the same time, as both sides seek to strengthen their positions in the league standings.
Sunday’s fixtures will see six matches played simultaneously at 4 p.m.
Enyimba will welcome Warri Wolves to the Enyimba Stadium in Aba, while Kano Pillars host Katsina United at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
Kwara United’s Saturday engagement means they will not feature on Sunday, leaving Abia Warriors to turn their attention to their next scheduled fixture after the Ilorin encounter.
Rivers United will take on Barau FC at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, with the home side seeking to make the most of its advantage.
In Lagos, Inter Lagos are scheduled to face Nasarawa United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan. Niger Tornadoes will entertain Ikorodu City at the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna, while Plateau United host Sporting Lagos at the New Jos Stadium.
The matches present opportunities for the participating clubs to improve their points tallies as the league campaign progresses. With several teams still working to establish consistency, the outcomes could prove important to their early-season ambitions.
Rangers’ postponement leaves their meeting with Bendel Insurance without a new date. Bendel Insurance will subsequently host Rivers United on October 25, while Rangers’ immediate attention will be on their continental assignment against MC Alger.
Rangers face MC Alger in continental test
Rangers International are among the Nigerian clubs seeking to make an impact in Africa this season, and their home encounter against MC Alger will be one of Sunday’s key continental fixtures.
The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.
The Flying Antelopes will aim to secure a favourable first-leg result before travelling to Algeria for the return encounter. With qualification decided over two legs, the Nigerian side will need to balance attacking ambition with defensive discipline to avoid conceding an advantage to their opponents.
MC Alger, meanwhile, will be seeking a result that keeps them firmly in contention ahead of the return match.
The fixture also explains the postponement of Rangers’ domestic meeting with Bendel Insurance. The NPFL encounter was originally scheduled for the same day but has been moved to accommodate the club’s participation in the continental competition.
For Nigerian football, Rangers’ progress would provide another opportunity for the country to maintain a presence among Africa’s leading club sides.
African giants begin their campaigns
Friday’s CAF Champions League programme featured Egypt’s Pyramids FC against El Merriekh Bentiu of South Sudan, alongside the meeting between Rwanda’s APR FC and Egyptian giants Zamalek.
Saturday’s fixtures include CFFA of Madagascar against Tanzania’s Young Africans, Namibia’s African Stars against South African side Orlando Pirates, and TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo against Tunisia’s Club Africain.
Côte d’Ivoire’s San Pedro are scheduled to face Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou, while Sierra Leone’s Star Sport Academy take on Morocco’s RS Berkane.
The ties will test the competing sides’ ability to secure an advantage before the return matches, with several clubs entering the round carrying substantial continental experience.
Orlando Pirates, TP Mazembe and Young Africans will be among the sides seeking positive away performances, while Zamalek and RS Berkane will also be looking to strengthen their prospects of progressing.
Defending champions Sundowns face Wiliete
Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns begin their title defence against Angola’s Wiliete Sport Clube on Sunday.
The South African side will travel to Angola for the first leg, with Wiliete seeking to make home advantage count against one of the continent’s strongest clubs.
Sundowns enter the competition at this stage alongside other clubs that received byes into the second preliminary round. Their immediate objective will be to negotiate the two-legged tie and move closer to the group stage as they pursue another continental title.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Zimbabwe’s Scottland FC will face Angola’s Petro Atlético, while Ethiopia’s Sidama Bunna meet Sudanese giants Al-Hilal Omdurman.
Guinea’s Horoya AC are scheduled to take on Sudan’s Al-Merrikh, while Libya’s Al-Swehly face four-time African champions Espérance Sportive de Tunis.
Senegal’s Teungueth FC will play Cameroon’s Colombe Sportive, and Morocco’s Maghreb Fès are scheduled to meet Côte d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas.
The remaining listed fixture, between Equatorial Guinea’s 15 de Agosto and Tanzania’s Simba SC, is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20.
Qualification race intensifies
The second preliminary round represents a decisive stage in the pursuit of places in the CAF Champions League group phase. The 16 successful clubs will join the competition’s group-stage campaign, which is scheduled to begin in late November.
The first-leg encounters offer teams an opportunity to build an advantage, but the return matches will ultimately determine who progresses.
CAF has also announced financial support of $100,000 for clubs eliminated during the preliminary rounds to help cover travel and logistical expenses associated with continental participation.
As the African competition gathers momentum, attention will also remain on the NPFL, where clubs continue to pursue domestic points and establish their positions in the standings.
For Rangers, the priority is MC Alger. For the rest of the NPFL, the weekend presents another opportunity to make progress in the domestic race, while across Africa, established contenders and ambitious challengers begin their fight for a place among the continent’s elite.
