The Dallas Cowboys are looking for solutions as they turn to Mike Pettine to assist them on the defensive side of the ball for the remainder of the 2026 NFL season.
Dallas has only managed to win two of its first five games of the season. The defense isn’t faring well this season. They conceded 136 total points so far this campaign, an average of 27.2 points per contest. They must figure out their issue immediately before it takes a turn for the worst.
The Cowboys have made a tweak to their defensive staff. They hired Pettine on Oct. 12 as a senior defensive analyst, embracing a new approach to how they can improve on that side of the ball. He spoke with media on Thursday as he went over what his role will look like during gamedays, per reporter Jon Machota.

“New Cowboys senior defensive assistant Mike Pettine said he’s here to support Christian Parker and Brian Schottenheimer. On gameday he’ll be in the booth as “another set of eyes,”” Machota wrote.
“On Dallas’ defensive issues: “It’s a lot of little things.””
What lies ahead for Mike Pettine, Cowboys
Mike Pettine has plenty of experience as a defensive coach. He hopes that will help him solve some of the Cowboys’ problems.
“I think I can help a lot,” Pettine said. “It’s funny, I have about a four-inch thick book of what not to do, and a very thin one of what to do. So, I think that’s key, is being able to learn from others’ mistakers. As much as you think you’re prepared for it, you’re really not until you get into it. And I think that’s where I’ll be able to help him.”
Dallas has a 2-3 record this season, sitting at third place in the NFC East Division standings. They are above the Washington Commanders while trailing the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants.
The Cowboys look forward to their next matchup. They face the Green Bay Packers on the road as kickoff commences on Oct. 18 at 8:20 p.m. ET.
