Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni faced the wrath of the media after QB Jalen Hurts was ruled out for the season, but fans are sticking up for the under-fire coach.
Sirianni became the Eagles’ mouthpiece in explaining why the team took risks with Jalen Hurts’ health, playing the 28-year-old QB on minimal rest after a superficial blood clot diagnosis in London.
With Hurts health worsening as the blood clots moved to both his lungs, requiring him to miss the rest of the season, the Eagles sent HC Sirianni to face the music in front of the media without preparing him properly.
Nick Sirianni’s empty responses on Jalen Hurts’ injury generate fan sympathy
Sirianni got into a heated back-and-forth with multiple media members, primarily ones that grilled him over the decision to let Hurts fly back from London despite having active blood clots.
With coach Sirianni not being the doctor who cleared Hurts to play and travel, his answer did little to satisfy the media, leading to a heated back-and-forth with reporters.
“Again, I am not a medical expert. We get medical information from our guys. We put our players’ health first and foremost in every situation… I have addressed this; the medical experts are there. I have answered this multiple times. We have put out multiple statements for you guys.”
With Sirianni clearly lacking knowledge of the medical team’s decision-making process, fans could see that he had been made the spokesperson of the situation when the team’s medical team or front office management should be discussing what went down.
“This is an organisational issue more than a coaching staff issue. In particular, Sirianni shouldn’t be facing the music by himself while the front office and doctors hide in their offices. They’re the ones who owe answers,” said one fan, describing the situation bluntly.
“Eagles higher-ups really left him out to dry. Nasty work, man,” said another fan.
“Howie and Jeff Lurie should have been there to answer questions too. Truly cowardly of both of them to hide from the media,” demanded one fan.
“Owner and GM should be the ones answering for this, not Nick. Eagles org is goofy for driving the bus over Nick like this,” said a fan defending Sirianni.
“There needs to be a federal investigation for this. Too much at stake with sports betting in the mix,” said one fan, suspecting foul play of some sort in this situation.
With the Eagles and Hurts’ own management releasing statements which make it clear that they are moving on with Hurts’ recovery instead of focusing on what went wrong, we might not get a clear answer to what happened until the Eagles are compelled to share their decision-making.
For now, the most important thing is to ensure Hurts is safe and makes a full recovery from his deep vein thrombosis diagnosis to be in a position to return to the field next season.
