- Lancashire reportedly declined to renew James Anderson's contract for the 2027 season, leaving the 44-year-old fast bowler without a county team
- Anderson, who holds the third-most Test wickets of all time with 704 in 188 matches, took 50 wickets at an average of 17 last season
- Cricket fans and former England captain Nasser Hussain have voiced outrage over the decision, calling it a disrespectful treatment of a legend
James Anderson is widely expected to retire from professional cricket after Lancashire declined to offer the pace bowling great a contract for the 2027 season, according to a report by Ali Martin of The Guardian published on Friday, 23 October 2026.
Anderson, 44, holds 704 wickets across 188 Test appearances, the third-highest tally in history and the most by any fast bowler. He retired from international cricket in 2024, though by many accounts the decision was not entirely his own.
He continued at first-class level with Lancashire and took 50 wickets at an average of 17 last season, a return that suggested he remained competitive at county level.
Lancashire Under Pressure After Poor Season
The county finished second-from-bottom in Division 2 this year and is currently reviewing its cricket operations. Richard Kenyon, brought in from Nottinghamshire as chief executive, and Paul Farbrace, appointed director of cricket from Sussex, are central to the restructuring effort. Anderson had captained Lancashire for the past two seasons and was contracted on a year-by-year basis.
Martin's report indicates that Anderson is now "expected" to retire from professional cricket rather than seek a contract with another county.
Hussain Criticises Lancashire's Handling of Anderson
Former England captain Nasser Hussain expressed his disappointment in a column for Sky Sports:
"This would be a hugely sad way for James Anderson to go out. Of all the things wrong at Lancashire recently and all the problems they've had, on and off the field, I didn't think Anderson was one of them. If you want to make change, you've got to try and have people like Anderson that take you and help you on that journey. I'm just not sure it's the way you treat such a legend of the club, just not to renew his contract like that."
Reaction on social media reflected widespread frustration. [@Stephan49673730](https://x.com/Stephan49673730) wrote:

"Disgusting way to treat the 🐐 50 wickets at 17, player of the year and as fit as anyone. #SackTheBoard."

"Will nobody let him finish on his own terms? England dumped him, now Lancashire have done the same. He's earned more respect than that."
Anderson's first-class record stands at 1,193 wickets in 315 matches. Should he retire, it will mark the second time in two years that the decision to end a chapter of his career has effectively been made for him.
